What works best, to use ice or heat for pain relief for an injury?
Here's one way to remember what to do when you first hurt yourself: Ice is nice, hot is not. That's true for the first two to three days while your system is responding to the injury. Holding an ice pack to the area (we like to use a bag of frozen peas -- they mold to the spot) for 15 to 30 minutes at a time reduces pain and can prevent swelling when you also elevate the injured body part and apply pressure to it. (Remember it by the acronym RICE, for rest, ice, compression and elevation.)

Heat is not your friend at first, because it increases circulation, which puts painful pressure on nerve endings. The warmth stimulates the flow of inflammatory chemicals, too, which make pain worse. Save the heating pad for 48 to 72 hours after the injury -- that's when you want to boost blood flow to ferry away waste and debris, enhance delivery of nutrients and oxygen to speed healing and raise the pain threshold in nerves. Warmth also relieves stiffness, helping you move more freely, and that further increases the healing blood flow.

Is it true that having a tubal ligation can cause heavy bleeding or bleeding between periods? I've heard these are part of what people are calling "post tubal ligation syndrome."
It's doubtful that tubal ligation is the problem. Researchers studying data from more than 10,000 women found that those who had undergone this procedure were no more likely than other women to have menstrual problems. That doesn't mean that some women don't have heavy bleeding or bleeding between periods after tubals. It's just that the tubal may not be the cause. Instead, it may be that women who opt for having their tubes tied also recently stopped taking birth-control pills or have been pregnant -- and both can cause heavy bleeding.
Other issues attributed to the syndrome include menopause-like symptoms of mood swings, depression, hot flashes and insomnia. But since tubal ligation doesn't affect your ovaries, the major source of your female hormones, the procedure isn't a likely reason for those, either. That said, if the symptoms bother you, go to your gynecologist; she may be able to help you get rid of them, no matter the cause.

No Depression: Riding the Lexapro Wave

  • Mar. 20th, 2009 at 4:04 PM

Mkay, little odd; I woke up with anxiety this morning. I'm not used to feeling this anymore and thinking about it makes it worse. It's so weird, because there is literally nothing that could have caused this externally and it has to be related to the meds. I've noticed that I keep coming up with things to be anxious about. Kind of like I'm forcing myself to find something to pair the anxiety with. The thoughts I'm coming up with are scary, and not because the thoughts themselves are scary, but because I know that the thoughts I'm having are extremely irrational and I'm wondering how long I've done this to myself. How many situations have I ruined by having irrational, anxious thoughts? I'm gonna ride it out until 2:15, which is when I've scheduled my dose for today. We'll see how it goes.

Hi. I think Loulu2u said it well.
Here is some more information:
.
Fexofenadine (Allegra) is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergy symptoms. Whats great about it is that it is NON SEDATING - Claritin can make you drowsy at higher doses and Zyrtecs regular dosing can have sedating effects.

There are several versions of Allergra including those with Pseudophedrine (Allegra D), orally disintegrating tablets, and various dosaging (180mg, 120mg, 60mg) options.

I have such severe allergies (year round - but Trees/Grasses/Molds are my worst) that I take the 180 mg dose twice a day. I have had no adverse side effects. At times, I take a decongestant (pseudophedrine) along with the fexofenadine to help with the extra stuffies of the bad reactions.

I did some research to help figure the answer to your question. I found your answer and a bit more. Maybe the info here is too much - but atleast I learned a bit.

Drugs dot com says that fexofenadine (the generic version of Allegra) is rapidly absorbed in a mean average of 2.6 hours. So, if you have been taking Allegra for a few days now, you should have a good level built up in your blood stream. If you are not finding relief, you should contact your doctor. The dosaging may not be enough, you might be taking a conflicting medication which limits the abilites of Allegra to work, you might need additional help to get over the rought times.

Here are a few suggestions about taking Allegra/Fexofenadine:

* Take with water, not juice (see study below)
* Take around the same time every day.
* If you take an antacid, take the antacid several hours before or after you take the Allegra.
* Do not eat with a high fat meal, it reduces plasma levels by 20% (drugs.com)

PS -
I just found this out - that if you are thinking about becoming pregnant, you might want to check with your doctor. Allegra is a Class C drug - which means it might cause harm to the baby or be passed along in breast milk. hmmm...yet its safe enough for a 2 year old with hives.

. Hence, the availability of biologically dynamic free testosterone is reduced. From the other presently available progestins, the third-generation progestin norgestimate has reduced inherent androgenicity, which new generation of medication has been proven effective for moderate inflammatory acne treatment. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had labeled the Ortho Tri-Cyclen, a triphasic mixcture of norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol for the treatment of women and adolescent girls acne vulgaris. There are other reasonable choices for the medication of acne like the other norgestimate (Ortho-Cyclen) or desogestrel containing contraceptive agents. Acne patient needs to be medicated for about two to four months of therapy before any health or skin improvement becomes possible; however, if the treatment has been discontinued the patient is likely to experience relapses. There are drawbacks, however in using the contraceptive as the medication for acne conditions. Strict coherence to the words of the reliable dermatologist and physician must be observed.

Did you know that antibiotics work for acne? Doctors have been prescribing antibiotics for almost any worse conditions of illnesses. Surprisingly, even the acne skin problem can be cured by antibiotics. Yet, the most interesting question is, how do antibiotics work? It has been witnessed by many patients that these antibiotics do really serve as magic potions that work with great wonders. These antibiotics have been notably working through several mechanisms. The antibiotics are wrestling against a number of bacteria that are infecting the human body like the ones that trigger excessive coughing, for an instance, or other worse condition of a skin related problem like acne or any other related disorders. The bacteria that start to surround the follicle must be fought and won over by the introduced bodies of antibiotics. The domination of White Blood Cells (WBC) over the number of red blood cells or the so-called hemoglobin is not a normal condition; hence, the antibiotics must be introduced to the body in order to reduce the produced irritating chemicals of the WBC. Moreover, the concentration of fatty acids in the sebum is reduced by antibiotics. The inflammatory response of acne can also be reduced by the intervention of antibiotics on the infected body areas.

Did you know that you can revive your metabolic system and prevent the clogging of pores through exercise? Workouts are healthfully useful. Imagine some people of lazy bones, who never engage to sporty activities or nature trips like mountaineering, trekking or others which require active motion. Their tendency is to develop a stout figure, a greasy skin and a vulnerability to acne, pimples and blemished. Youve got to help revive your metabolic system through some moderate to heavy exercises, so that whatever wastes are starting to clog on your skin pores can be washed away by your perspiration. The workout does not only give off a feeling of well-being and the desired physical fitness but also does help sweat out the toxins in the skin. In this manner, the clogging of pores is prevented. Do not content yourself sitting on a couch while lazily watching a movie, surfing the net or doing other non-active things. Involve your body to more rigorous works that allow you to perspire so that you can excrete some unneeded body wastes though your skin pores. Activate your metabolic system. The faster you metabolize and release off your heat energy through vigorous activities, the better your skin condition can become.

Did you know that Sun Protection Factor is good to your acne-body prone areas? There was a time when sun exposure was believed to help acne. However, if you overdo your sun exposure, its excessiveness can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. Consequently, the received risks have worse outweighed the benefits. If your job is almost under the suns exposure or perhaps you hardly can refuse your friends invitation to swimming outings, then you have to treat your acne-prone areas before great damage is brought forth. Protect your skin with a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Again, look for the lotion or cream that is oil-free or noncomedogenic. You have to be diligent about reapplying the sunscreen often because many waterproof products are likely to clog oil glands on the face. Screen out the sun, as possibly as you can. Once you start perspiring because of the scorching heat of the sun during summer, your skin is also triggered to produce more oils. Youve got to apply products that have SPF 15 content whenever you cannot resist your wants to be under the sun. You can consult your dermatologist about applying any products with SPF 15 content so that you would not overdo the application and lead yourself to greater risks.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of pain and illness and disease in Asia. It is a publicly (non-medically) coined term used in common language and speech to indicate a highly stressed state of mind. It was first used over 3,000 years ago in China and is currently the major component of traditional Chinese medicine.

A person having a nervous breakdown may have been greatly depressed or anxious for a long period of time before the breakdown. It is a safe medical technique that is used in order to help the body heal itself. In extreme cases of breakdown, people also lose their awareness of reality, which is also known as impaired reality testing.Day to day activities and chores are seen as impossible tasks by nervous wrecks.

The day to day pressures of life and an inclination towards the all or nothing' thinking, add up to a nervous breakdown. Acupuncture is a way to prevent surgery and an alternative to putting chemicals into the body. "Nervous breakdown" is a casual general public term with no medical text acknowledging it.

Acupuncture is also an excellent alternative to using drugs that have major side effects on the body.

More precisely one should refer to the state of nervous breakdown as the 'Exhaustion Phas' of the General Adaption Syndrome. Electro acupuncture was also developed in China around 1934. It is caused by extreme stress. It is used as an extension for the hand manipulation of acupuncture needles. This stress includes academic pressures, parental and institutional hassles, peer pressure, big purchases, changes in eating and sleeping cycles, relocation to different cities and even harsh climatic conditions. A needle is inserted under into the skin as would normally be done with the regular hand manipulation and then an electrode would be attached to the needle to provide continuous stimulation.

General Adaption Syndrome
The general adaption syndrome has three notable phases namely alarm, resistance, and exhaustion, when listed in order of their occurrence. Electro acupuncture basically substitutes for prolonged hand maneuvering.

Relieving Fatigue

The acupuncture patient needs a specific amount of stimulation and sometimes the practitioner may pause due to fatigue. The phases are restricted and synchronized by the adrenal glands, which are located right above the kidneys in humans. Electro acupuncture will assure that the patient will get the correct amount of stimulation for his treatment.

The hormone adrenaline and noradrenaline are released by the inner side of the adrenal gland called adrenal medulla. Electro acupuncture also helps to reduce the total treatment time by providing continued stimulation. Whenever any stressful situation arises it is these hormones that deal with it.

This is good time management for the practitioner, as he can attend to other acupuncture patients. Adrenal cortex, which is the outer side of the adrenal gland, produces hormones like glucocorticoids and mineralcorticoids. Electro acupuncture can produce a stronger stimulation, if necessary, without causing any tissue damage resulting from the lifting, twirling and thrusting of the needle. These hormones help the body cope with periods of extended stress.

Onset of the Breakdown
The body can deal with stress only up to a threshold beyond which a person will reach the exhaustion stage of the general adaptation syndrome. Strong stimulation is used for the treatment of neuralgia and paralysis. At this stage, glucocorticoids levels have been depleted and are no longer replenished by the adrenal cortex. It is also much easier to control the frequency and the amount of the stimulus with electro acupuncture than it is with hand manipulation of the needles.

As a consequence, no extra nutrients and sugar reach the body cells in need of it.

The biggest disadvantage of electro acupuncture is the lack of direct contact the practitioner has in the actual acupuncture therapy that is taking place. A further mineral imbalance occurs when excess amounts of potassium are released in the blood stream. The practitioner may not be able to respond to changes that are taking place during electro acupuncture, if electrodes are used in place of hand manipulation.

The use of electro acupuncture is especially effective for treatment of neurological diseases, including spasm, chronic pain and paralysis. This imbalance heavily increases the load on the brain, blood vessels, heart and other body parts.

Consequences of the breakdown
In overtly stressful situations either the whole body or a specific organ may collapse. Caution should be used in patients with serious cardiac diseases. Stress has also been found to be related to depression, cancer, PMS, menstrual problems, autoimmune diseases, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, ulcers and arthritis. It is highly recommended to avoid placing any electrodes near the heart because the heart may respond adversely to electrical impulses. Dissolution of personality albeit provisional may occur and is described in layman's language as snapping. But, the advantages overwhelming outweigh the disadvantages in electro acupuncture.

People experiencing a nervous breakdown also cry unmanageably and lose interest and pleasure in all day to day chores. At least when using the electrode approach, the acupuncture will be complete as in the ways of the old Chinese master acupuncturists.

But I did find a way out of this nightmare. I want to share with others who might be going through something like this that I found a way out of my fears. I found a program called ‘Panic Away’, by Joe Barry, on the Internet. I was initially suspicious of buying it as I had never heard of it before. But I saw that there were many testimonials from satisfied fellow-sufferers and these encouraged me to download the e-book. As I studied it I felt Mr Barry was talking right at me. He understood precisely what I was experiencing and he showed me a way to escape from anxiety with a technique he calls the ‘One Move’.
This method has been a breakthrough for me. I used the system each morning (when I usually have my worst anxiety) and straight away I noticed a difference. Something was shifting – it’s difficult to explain: like a light going on – I had a sense that I was not running away from the panic any longer. Quite a few weeks passed without a major anxiety attack and then I gradually attempted to do things I was shunning – driving my car on my own, air travel on my own, lots of activities on my own where before I wanted somebody with me. A year later, here I am, feeling 100% improved. I now do not dread anxiety sneaking back because I have progressed way past it. That is what Joe Barry’s Panic Away has taught me.

Very little energy to write tonight. After getting into the details, which I will do soon after this saga is over, I began weaning myself off of an anti-depressant drug called Lexapro last month. Ive never really outworn depressed, but was put on it because of some panic episodes after a surgery I had this summer panic likely caused from all the narcotic painkillers I was on from surgery.
My doctor told me I would be gnarly ending my dosage after I had been on 5mg for a while and that there werent really and side effects to be had, and god love you, Doc, but you were wrong.
I have spent most of the last few days with moderate to severe withdrawal symptoms, some of which can only be described and understood by those who have had them. The first nine days off of Lexapro were fine, but starting yesterday, my brain was no longer happy and demanded it have Lexapro now!
1. I began not sleeping three nights ago. I would lucid dream all night, and have had horrible nightmares ever since not characteristic of me at all. 2. Im losing all inhibition. I would just establish blurting out things randomly to people, sometimes well angry elements, articles that my grad professors imaginably didnt look too kindly on. 3. I am violently on edge, and had that low-lying rageful feeling like I could hurt something or someone, but I chiefly just lashed out verbally at people. 4. I am getting paranoid and had a mild short-term memory loss episode tonight (see below) which Ive never even come close to having before. 5. I have this feeling like my head is a sand bag, and when I twist my head its almost like it takes my brain a couple reproductions to catch up. So I see what Im looking at and I see the end count where my head is facing, but the in between is very unknown to me. Some call it having cognate the lights become trails when you move your eyes. 6. I have this flimsy feeling in my head like someone is grinding their teeth or tinging a piece of sheet metal in my head. Some have described these kinds of head zaps which hit towns close to the feeling. 7. For the first time in my life I feel like I could conscientious die. Comparable, not really kill myself, but kind of just let something bad ensue to me, maybe take risks, like drive my car of the road or walk out into an intersection. Never had any thoughts identical this ever before, and dont plan on acting on them either! But Philip Dawdy up at Furious Seasons has documented well the connection between suicide and Lexapro. 8. And I eat a lot, which seems to be another common side-effect of coming off the drug. Today I started to completely lose sense of where I was, who I was, and what I was doing. I would say things and not realize I was saying them until after I said them. I was interrupting professors, I was just saying whatever came to my mind so horrible that one person had to take me aside and say, re being an ass, whats going on?
Finally, I broke down about half way through my last class tonight. I had what I can only describe as a mild dissociation and objective walked out of class without realizing it until I settle myself crying in a chair down the hallway. Then I ran into an entire group of new students from my program and the director who asked, are you okay? Thats all it took cause I burst out in tears in front of that whole group of students feeling completely helpless and not having any more Lexapro to support me get rid of the withdrawals. I was spent and couldnt take it anymore. I really just wanted some help.
So my wife talked to the doctor tonight and he was like, he shouldnt be having such strong withdrawals. Of course its just me right? Wrong again. A quick Google on Lexapro withdrawals or weaning off of Lexapro bring back hundreds of sites and forums of citizens in my exact dupe position. For pattern, on Drugs.com there is a discussion forum with 314 pages of posts devoted solely to people trying to get off of Lexapro.
Some people I read have been driving for to get off this supposedly non-addictive anti-depressant for anywhere from 3 to 8 months, and still are having difficulties breaking free of it. Ive read a statistic of posts of people who did it successfully saying they really couldnt even stop at having .25 mg per day, but then had to got to .25 mg occasionally other day, to .25 mg every third day. Its charming intense for being a non-addictive drug.
How is it that millions of society on-line are having the same experience Im having struggling to kick that shit and the doctors are adage, well, you should be refined after 5mg Are the doctors, possibly, being coached by the makers of Lexapro? How dare I reckon with that?
Long story short because Im exhausted, but I got my hands on some Lexapro tonight, and per my doctor, went back on it to wean more slowly that pace.
I hate this so much and yen so bad to be rid of this crap from my system. When youre taking it you dont realize how much it affects your brain until, of course, you try to stop taking it. Seemingly a lot such smokers feel they have to have them now just to feel normal.
Again, I will be posting a larger post about Lexapro and Withdrawal at another time when Im in a more coherent state. In the meantime, please share your stories of withdrawal from Lexapro or other SSRI anti-depressants, and feel free to use a pseudonym as well. And please bear with me as I rid myself of that awful substance. Ill take the panic attacks over this any day. Please be careful before going on or coming off of these supposedly safe drugs. I really just hope I can sleep tonight.

Health experts are encouraging all those people who do not want to feel that they are getting old, that aging can in fact be controlled directly by each individual.
A professor from the University of California-San Francisco explained that it is not precisely actual age that determines how old we look, rather the complex interaction between our genes and lifestyle.
We can in fact stem the aging process by certain changes in our lifestyle, which will contribute to a healthier function of our cellular reproduction, hence the way we look on the outside.
Ideally, exercising regularly, healthy eating habits, together with a solid social assistance and giving up any bad habits such as excessive drinking and smoking will have direct consequences on how old we look.
Research has also found that the levels of an enzyme ‘telomerase’, which slows down the aging of cells and prevents cancer, can be increased with a healthy diet low in fat, exercising as well as relaxation therapies.
The research demonstrated that those patients who changed their lifestyle and eating habits, substituting the fat and sugar intake with vegetables, fruit, whole grain wheat products in addition to exercise stood a 30 percent better chance of fighting against aging and cancer, due to the increase of telomerase levels.

Escitalopram (Lexapro by Forest Laboratories in the United States and elsewhere by Lundbeck as Cipralex, Sipralexa, Seroplex and also as Lexapro) is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. It is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder; other indications include social anxiety disorder, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Escitalopram is the S-stereoisomer (enantiomer) of the earlier Lundbeck drug citalopram (Celexa), hence the name escitalopram. Escitalopram is noted for its high selectivity of serotonin reuptake inhibition and as a result has fewer side effects not related to its serotonergic activity. Escitalopram acts by increasing intrasynaptic levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter into the neuron. Of the SSRIs currently on the market escitalopram has the highest affinity for the human serotonin transporter (SERT). Another enantiomer of citalopram (R-citalopram) counteracts to a certain degree the serotonin-enhancing action of escitalopram. As a result, escitalopram is a more potent antidepressant than citalopram, which is a mixture of escitalopram and R-citalopram. In order to explain this phenomenon, researchers from Lundbeck proposed that escitalopram enhances its own binding via an additional interaction with another allosteric site on the transporter. Further research by the same group showed that R-citalopram also enhances binding of escitalopram, and therefore the allosteric interaction cannot explain the observed counteracting effect. In the most recent paper, however, the same authors again reversed their findings and reported that R-citalopram decreases binding of escitalopram to the transporter. Although allosteric binding of escitalopram to the serotonin transporter is of unquestionable research interest, its clinical relevance is unclear since the binding of escitalopram to the allosteric site is at least 1000 times weaker than to the primary binding site.
In vitro studies using human liver microsomes indicated that CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 are the primary isozymes involved in the N-demethylation of escitalopram.

I lived through he polio epidemic and was paralyzed from the waste down for three days. I was one of the lucky kids. In 1998 they tried to average out the (reported) number of people affected by polio. The guessed at about 1.63 million in the U.S. and 20 million world wide and this was cases from the 1940s through the 1960s. Many children died and many were left crippled and many were never taken to a doctor or reported! It was in 1954 that a vaccine was found and into the late 60s before the live vaccine was recognized as dangerous. But these vaccines stopped polio. If we had not been able to stop the wild polio virus I think we would have a lot less people in the world and a lot more crippled people in the world.
And now we have found that those of us who had polio now come down with Post Polio Syndrome, meaning that the little neurons in the spine that died off and were rebuilt are weakening and starting to die off again. Now you have millions of people with polio like symptoms, back in a wheel chair and although they do not have the virus they are disabled from having had it as children. Polio has about a two week window in which it can be transmitted, most of our cases were between 1940 and 1955, so say that kept escalating at least 100,000 a year we would be in very sad shape, and would still be living in fear of using a swimming pool or drinking from a water fountain. The numbers would have had to climb to higher yearly rate as their would be more people spreading the disease!
The wild polio virus is still going in 14 other third world countries, especially Nigera, it is up from last years count. All that would have to happen is for someone carrying the polio virus come into the U.S. and if we werent vaccinated we would pick up polio from them. Just like what happened in a Quaker village less that 10 years ago.
Below is an artice on what happend in Africa in 2004 when they stopped the vaccine.

After yesterdays indications that Amazon UK might cancel G1G1 pre-orders du e to OLPC not fulfilling them within 30 days was very relieved to receive an e-mail from x European G1G1 dnor who just received shippinf notification vroj Amazon.
So i looks like European G1G1 donors woll be able to put their XOs under the Christmas trees a nd toy around with them over the holiday!!
A lot of people - both in OLPCs HQ 1CC and in European grassroots organizations - spent a lot of time and energy working on making G1G1 Europe happen over the past few weeks. Kudos to all of them and Im sure many G1G1 donors around Europe will appreciate their amazing work and hopefully join the efforts by contributing to One Laptop per Child in one way or another.
