Article by Zen Habits contributor Jonathan Mead ; follow him on twitter . “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” - Bruce Lee Bruce Lee was a paragon of cool and an icon of the ultimate bad-ass. Not only were his martial arts skills incredible, but he had such an impressive physique that even bodybuilders in the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger admired him. Whats more impressive is that Bruce trained his body without ever stepping into a gym and with very little use of weights or machines. Here are just a few of Lees physical feats : Performed one-hand push-ups using only the thumb and index finger . Could hold an elevated v-sit position for 30 minutes or longer. Could throw grains of rice up into the air and then catch them in mid-flight using chopsticks. Could break wooden boards 6 inches (15 cm) thick. Performed 50 reps of one-arm chin-ups. While you may not get to Bruce Lees level overnight, you can start getting in shape without the use of a lot of fancy (and expensive) equipment. You can do it from the comfort of your own home, in a space as large as a bathroom. Part of the reason I started training without a gym was because I began training in Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lees method of martial arts). But I also got tired of paying monthly gym dues. At the time, I was looking for things I could cut out of my monthly budget to save a little extra money. I thought about getting rid of my gym membership altogether, but I didnt want to sacrifice my health or physical fitness. So I found another way. For months, I havent had a gym membership, yet Im getting stronger and faster than Ive ever been in my life. You dont have to buy lots of weights or machines, either. The most expensive equipment youll need (a simple doorway pull-up bar) will cost no more than $35.00. Bruce Lee was a big proponent of holistic or total fitness. His workouts included strength, speed, endurance, and flexibility training. Heres just a few of the ways you can start getting stronger, faster and more toned without ever stepping into a gym: Calisthenics . There are so many different bodyweight exercises out there, but well start with the basics. For the lower body : lunges and squats are a good start. For upper body : pull-ups, push-ups, and shoulder press ups . For your core : crunches, chops, and reverse crunches will get you going. Whats great about bodyweight exercises is that they build functional strength. Theyre natural movements you would use in real life situations like sports, self-defense, gardening, or doing chores. Plus when you do bodyweight exercises, you force your body to use more supporting and balancing muscles than you would on machines. For more bodyweight exercises check out these great resources: The Ultimate Guide to Bodyweight Training: 100 Killer Resources and for an awesome list of bodyweight exercises with illustrations check out Combat Fitness . Bonus : Top 10 Best Bodyweight Exercises for Advanced and Beginners . Isometric exercises . These are basic bodyweight exercises, but where you hold your body in a static position. Examples of these are the frog sit, v-sit, horse stance, hanging from a pull-up bar, and the plank . Calisthenic exercises will improve muscle strength over a range of motion, but isometric exercises are great for joint and stabilizing strength. Range of motion and flexibility . The best exercise Ive found for range of motion and flexibility is yoga. The best thing about yoga is that no equipment is required and you can find tons of free resources online for yoga routines. Check out Anmol Mehtas Yoga Illustrations to get you started. Balance. Balance is the ability to keep your equilibrium when your center of gravity is thrown off-balance. There are many ways you can practice balance every day (we wont get into tight rope walking here). When youre putting on your shoes or getting dressed, do it on one foot. Walk on the curb and try to walk in a straight line without stumbling. Or if youre really ambitious, theres always pogo sticking and unicycling. Dynamic exercise . Dynamic exercise is anything where youre not performing routine after routine. Things are in flux and constantly changing. Youre moving in more natural movements, rather than continuous repetition of fixed patterns. I recently started doing Jeet Kune Do in the park every weekend. Its a great way to get a good work out and learn self defense. Not to mention, practicing martial arts tends to make you inspired to further pursue and achieve higher levels of physical fitness. If youre not into martial arts, you can always pick up a sport like tennis, handball, basketball, or take dance classes. Do whatever youre naturally drawn to. Or if you struggle with seeing fitness as an enjoyable activity, you might consider getting a Wii Fit . Theres a lot of other opportunities for exercise that dont include a gym that I havent listed here. Hiking, jogging, skiing, yardwork The list could go on. Just use your imagination. Make it fun and change it up. Thats the great thing about exercising without a gym, theres so much to choose from. On a side note, I will, however, say that for me, it took a lot more discipline to work out from home. It was easy for me to just go to the gym. Once Im there, theres not a lot else I can do other than work out. But at home, theres always distraction, always other things you can do besides working out (like laying on the couch or surfing the internet). For me, practicing martial arts inspires me to be physically fit. While you might not have this problem, I thought it only fair to be upfront about this issue. The other motivator for me to work out from home besides saving money was the variety of workouts. Theres just so many more options with bodyweight exercises than machines. You can always do something to further challenge yourself. If push-ups are a breeze, you can try doing them on your fingers or in a close grip (with a medicine ball). If pull-ups become too easy, train for a one arm pull-up (insanely difficult). Attaining Bruce Lee like fitness isnt just about doing the types workouts he did and eating the same diet. What made Bruce so great was his natural curiosity and drive to constantly explore and learn more about fitness and personal growth. (His personal library contained over 2,000 books!) Tap into your own curiosity and make fitness enjoyable. Challenge yourself to new levels of fitness. Go beyond what you think you can do. “If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.” - Bruce Lee This article was written by Zen Habits contributor Jonathan Mead of Illuminated Mind . Colds are the most prevalent infectious disease in the United States. In traditional Chinese Medicine, colds are classified by the season, the weather system that produces them, and the symptoms. Since colds appear quite suddenly—and are accompanied by chills, sensitivity to cold and wind, clear watery discharge, lack of perspiration and aches that are better in the presence of heat—they are usually classified as a wind illness.
As such, traditional herbal treatments for a cold include warm pungent herbs that induce sweating. If the cold has a different presentation, it will have a different classification and different therapeutic strategy. In Western medicine, on the other hand, we are most often prescribed the same medications or given the same recommendations regardless of the variability in symptoms and presentation. The actual causes of a cold are also viewed differently.
The three most common symptoms of a cold are nasal stuffiness, sneezing, and a runny nose. Adults and older children generally have minimal or no fever. Infants and toddlers often run a fever in the 100 to 102 degree range.
Depending on which virus is the offender, the virus might also produce a headache, cough, postnasal drip, burning eyes, muscle aches, or a decreased appetite—but in a cold, the most prominent symptoms are usually nasal related.
You catch a cold without knowing it—the symptoms only begin in 1 to 5 days.
Usually the first sign is irritation in the nose or a scratchy feeling in the throat, followed within hours by sneezing and a watery nasal discharge. Within 1 to 3 days, the nasal secretions usually become thicker and perhaps yellow or green—this is a normal part of the common cold and is absolutely not a reason
for taking antibiotics. During this period, childrens eardrums can also become congested.
Colds usually resolve in about 7 days, with perhaps a lingering cough for another week. If a cold lasts longer, consider another problem, such as a sinus infection or allergies. (As I mentioned, a cold primarily affects the sinus region. While you may feel tired or have aches, the illness is centered in the nose, and most of the symptoms are above the neck.)
As parents may know all too well, children average 3 to 8 colds per year—most of which occur in the winter. (In areas where there is no winter, colds are most common in the rainy season.) Typically, parents get about half as many colds as their children do, not least of all due to the ease with which they’re spread.
When someone has a cold, their nasal secretions are teeming with infectious viruses. Sneezing, nose-blowing, and nose-wiping are the most common means by which the virus is spread. But you can catch a cold simply by breathing if you are close enough to a sneezer with a cold—or by touching your nose, eyes, or mouth after you have touched something contaminated by someone with a cold.
So, Rule #1 is the most obvious one: Keep your distance, wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your nose, eyes or mouth.
The flu, on the other hand, can be a much more serious illness. The flu is a contagious respiratory infection caused by a variety of influenza viruses. The flu season typically lasts from November to March. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
Seniors, toddlers, infants, and people with certain chronic health conditions are at higher risk for serious flu complications. Again, children are 2 to 3 times more likely than adults to get sick with the flu, and children frequently spread the virus through physical contact.
Flu outbreaks usually begin suddenly and occur in the late fall and winter. The disease often spreads through communities and results in an epidemic. During the epidemic, the number of cases peaks in about 3 weeks and subsides after another 3 or 4 weeks. Because schools are an excellent place for viruses to
spread, families with kids at school have more infections than those without.
Most people who get the flu recover within a week (although they may have a lingering cough and tire easily for a while longer). For elderly people, newborn babies, and people with certain chronic illnesses, however, the flu and its complications can be life-threatening.
As with a cold, you will usually feel symptoms 1 to 4 days after you are infected. You can spread the flu to others before your symptoms start and for another 3 to 4 days after your symptoms appear. The symptoms start very quickly and may include body aches, chills, dry cough, fever, headache, sore throat, and a stuffy nose. Typically, the fever begins to decline on the second or third day of the illness.
The Flu Vaccine: Should You Get One?
Many people still feel that the primary method of preventing the flu is to get an annual flu vaccine. Recent published data, however, has shed some doubt on this belief, yielding results that indicate that the effectiveness and benefits of the flu vaccine are questionable—especially for anyone over 70 years old or
with a compromised immune system.
The scientist who led this particular study concluded that the vaccine had marginal benefits, at best, for the so-called high-risk people—children, adults over the age of 50, people with weak immune systems and workers in the health care field. So, although the CDC still recommends the flu vaccine for these people, based on the recent data, these recommendations should probably be changed.
Many physicians, myself included, believe that the 130 million vaccines offered every year represent enormous financial profits for pharmaceutical companies—and that the politics of medicine likely play a big part in the CDC policy recommendations. This becomes even more obvious when you take a moment to weigh the vaccine’s potential risks.
What You Should Know About Flu Vaccine Risks
Yes, the flu vaccine can cause side effects. The most common side effect in children and adults is simply soreness at the site of the vaccination. Other side effects (especially in children who previously have not been exposed to a flu virus) include fever, tiredness, and sore muscles. These side effects may begin
6 to 12 hours after vaccination and may last for up to 2 days.
You should also be aware that viruses for producing the vaccine are grown in chicken eggs and may contain some egg protein, which poses an issue for those allergic to eggs.
While the flu vaccine is now available with and without mercury (thimerasol) as a preservative, the mercury-free version still contains trace amounts of the heavy metal, which are introduced during the manufacturing process. Even so, the amount adds up to less than 0.5 millionths of a gram.
A traditional flu vaccine that contains mercury, on the other hand, contains 50 times as much—or more. The traditional flu vaccine would give a 24 pound child about 25 times the daily amount of mercury that the EPA says is safe. So it goes without saying that, if you still choose to receive the flu shot, you should absolutely request the “mercury-free” version.
If you choose to forgo this particular method, however, you’ll be happy to hear that you have many alternative methods to choose from—options that will boost your body’s own defenses without any compromises to your health.
My health strategy for addressing the flu issue has three basic components—and whether were talking about a cold or the flu, this strategy includes my recommendations for both preventing and treating them. With that said, youll likely be among the lucky (I say, healthy) people who sail through the winter
without catching either, if you start with prevention—by far the best defense.
This includes building a strong immune system, which will not only prevent a cold or the flu, but it will also speed up recovery time if you do in fact get sick.
Recommendation #I: Long-term Prevention Through Immune Support
My leading recommendation here is to supplement with medicinal mushrooms, which are well documented for their ability to enhance immune function and help combat infection, especially on a long-term basis. Medicinal mushrooms are literally immune system coaches—and it goes without saying that it is more efficient to train our immune system when we are not under distress, i.e., already sick.
The beauty of medicinal mushrooms is that they are also of great benefit and my leading choice in times of distress, and when under increased risk of attack, as can happen with an aggressive flu pandemic.
Mushrooms naturally contain Beta glucans, simple polysaccharides (sugar/carbohydrate molecules) that enhance immune function by boosting macrophage activity - your first line of defense. Beta glucans can be cultivated in yeast cells and extracted and added to mushroom products for a booster effect. Thus, when you select a mushroom product be sure to select a product that contains additional Beta glucans for the best benefit.
I typically use herb-enhanced medicinal mushrooms on patients in my practice. These herb-grown mushroom formulas can be combined with additional mushroom products for long-term benefits, such as an overall multi-nutrient and immune enhancer for women and men. (Just be sure that your multinutrient contains vitamin C and zinc, both of which are important allies of your immune system.)
The best way to use medicinal mushrooms is to take them regularly at a maintenance dose (the recommended dosage on the label) and up the dosage when you are at greater risk or when you have a cold. I start them with what is called a loading dosage for the first 2-4 weeks. (A loading dose is double the
long-term regular maintenance dose that follows. At times of distress, or if there is an increased risk for colds and flu, doubling the dosage of medicinal mushrooms is extremely beneficial.)
When I get a cold, or when I am treating a patient with a cold or the flu, I use a mushroom preparation called Immucare as frequently as every hour, at the recommended dose. Within a short period of time, the cold is usually gone. But a similar strategy can be used with other supplements, as well.
For example, tonifying and adaptogenic herbs—such as Astragalus, Ginseng, and Eleutherococcus (Siberian ginseng)—are great choices for immune enhancement. Personally, I often use and recommend Flew Away; a Tibetan based herbal formulation that has shown to be an immunoactive compound in clinical studies. Simply take them as directed on the label.
How Your Daily Habits Can Support You
What you do every day is crucial to a strong immune system—perhaps even more so than supplements in the long-term. And these lifestyle factors aresimple and in all likelihood familiar: Be sure to drink plenty of fresh, clean water (about 8 glasses) and exercise daily. Take a brisk walk outdoors, do yoga, go for a jog. Do what brings you joy—believe it or not, happiness is a great immune enhancer.
But most importantly, you must get enough sleep. At least 40 million Americans have chronic sleep problems, and an additional 20 million experience occasional sleeping problems—a number that is no doubt partially responsible for the many health crises our country faces to day.
Adequate sleep is critical. Your body needs that down time to recharge and repair its basic systems so that you are in top function the following day. If you have trouble sleeping, exercise will help you. Also, go to bed at the same time each night and remove any distractions or disturbances from your bedroom—
remember it is your sanctuary of retreat from the cares and distractions of your busy day.
Recommendation #II: Short-term Enhanced Support and Risk Protection
This ones simple: As soon as people around you are coming down with colds and flu, or whenever you travel in the winter, you should increase the dosages of all supplements I recommend for prevention.
Recommendation #III: Fighting Active Colds and Flu
When You Have Them (or they have you!) In this case, medicinal mushrooms are once again my first choice (in the Immucare product), and the Tibetan herbal preparation Flew Away is my next choice.
That said, you should be aware that not all tonics and adaptogenics are appropriate when you are already sick. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), many adaptogenic herbs can drive the illness deeper into your body—and we don’t want that.
Herbs that I do think are appropriate in this case, if you wish to add them, include Echinacea and Goldenseal. Various Chinese herbal formulas such as Yin Qiao San (or Yin Chiao), Gui Zi Tang, Ge Gen Tang can also be effective, depending on the specific characteristics of the flu or cold. But you shouldn’t
take these without consulting an herbalist knowledgeable in TCM herbology.Chinese herbalists have used ginger for centuries as a cold reducer and decongestant. Garlic has antiviral antibacterial properties that strengthen the immune system. A hot drink of lemon, honey and water can help decongest and soothe sore throats.
A popular homeopathic preparation called Oscilloccinum can be used to relieve flu like symptoms.
Finally, when you have a cold or the flu, high dosages of vitamin C, as well as zinc are quite helpful.
Daily doses of Vitamin C can boost the immune system, offering potential protection from viruses and colds. Vitamin C is a nutrient that has been demonstrated to have a substantial impact on human health. Taking a daily dose of 1,000 mg of Vitamin C can strengthen your immune system and that, in turn, can help you avoid colds and nasty viruses. However, when have a cold, I recommend that you take 1,000 mg 3 times per day until your symptoms subside.
Similarly, Zinc helps to eliminate already existing free radicals and helps to prevent new ones from forming. Zinc is also the most important mineral to the thymus gland, which orchestrates the immune function in the human body.
Zinc deficiency is known to cause a reduction in the key players of your immune system, including T cells, NK cells and thymic hormone. Supplementation with zinc, on the other hand, increases your immune system’s ability to fight viral infections, allowing it to do its job more efficiently.
My recommendations at a glance For Prevention: Medicinal mushrooms boosted with Beta glucans, a good multinutrient that contains vitamin C and zinc, and Flew Away. Daily exercise, restful sleep, and 8 glasses of fresh, clean water per day.
For Risk Protection: Increase supplements you are taking for prevention. If you are not taking Padma Basic, consider adding it.
For Recovery: Increase dosage of medicinal mushrooms (Immucare) and Flew Away.
Echinacea and/or Goldenseal optional. Increased supplemental vitamin C and zinc. Plenty of rest and fresh, clean water. This three-pronged strategy makes lasting health is simple by employing solutions that will protect you through the winter and beyond. If you’d like more information on some of the specific recommendations I’ve made here, please feel free to browse my website—I have included several other free
reports there that deal with these herbs, botanicals, and vitamins in greater detail. And as always, don’t hesitate to share this information with your friends, your family, and anyone who is looking for healthy, natural ways to sail through cold and flu season.

Reuters Boston staff photographer Brian Snyder is traveling with Republican U.S. presidential nominee John McCain through election day. He and his colleague Jason Reed traveling with the Obama campaign have been posting daily blog entries sharing their experiences and favorite pictures of the day from their campaign coverage.
In my past campaign coverage experience U.S. presidential candidates do not often continue to campaign on election day. Instead they do a long series of satellite interviews with local television and radio stations in battleground states. But, after a seven state, 24-hour day of campaigning, Senator John McCain dropped off his ballot at his local polling place and headed back out on the campaign trail with a flight to Grand Junction, Colorado for a campaign rally, the final rally of what has been a long presidential campaign. Senator and Mrs. McCain climbed the steps to their campaign plane after that final rally, turned, and waved to the crowd gathered below for a final time as the McCain 2008 presidential campaign wound down. Hours later McCain would call Senator Barack Obama to concede defeat and congratulate the new president-elect.

This week begins with a fresh crop report from the U.S. government. USDA on Monday will update its latest U.S. and global supply-and-demand figures, featuring new 2008 American corn and soybean output numbers.
The report comes on the heels of the agencys unprecedented correction of its Oct. 10 crop report nearly two weeks ago when it found in error its acreage forecasts cutting one million harvested acres off of both corn and soy.
The general feeling is that USDA will raise its corn production and ending stocks projections to reflect strong harvest yields. In contrast, soy output and supply estimates will likely be lowered due to disappointing crop yields.
World and U.S. wheat supply forecasts were seen dropping because of dry growing conditions in Argentina and Australia and a better-than-expected export pace for U.S. wheat.
After the report well watch the outside markets, especially the energies which have a large influence over the grains, one cash-connected CBOT trader said.
The outside markets dominated the moves in CBOT grains and oilseeds last week. All slipped on signs of a deepening global recession. The Dow industrials fell 4 percent to end below the 9,000-mark. Crude oil sank $6 on the week, closing Friday at $61 a barrel after hitting a 19-month low the day before of $60.16 due to easing demand.
It was a week with plenty of news, including the election of a new U.S. president and the worst jobless rate in more than 14 years.
That brought added volatility to the Dow industrials, with CBOT markets tagging along. The Dow saw its biggest Election Day rally in history on Tuesday as investors savored the end of uncertainty surrounding the presidential election, followed by stocks having their worst two-day slide since October 1987.
Within CBOT markets, soybeans held up the best, falling just 1 percent compared to corn which was down more than 6 percent and wheat 3 percent lower.
Chinas voracious appetite for U.S. soybeans and a lack of farmer sales supported CBOT soy markets. Corn, on the other hand, is seeing mediocre demand given the ailing ethanol industry and stymied export sales.
Undoubtedly, CBOT markets will be driven by the economic landscape in the week ahead while waiting with bated breath for President-elect Barack Obamas pick for U.S. Treasury secretary.

*Just Us Women*: Facts about Clomid

  • Nov. 6th, 2008 at 4:48 AM

What an amazing out pour of support I have received in just a few days of starting this blog. I am so grateful and appreciative of every one's support. I have had e-mails, comments on my personal blog and this blog, and phone calls from everyone who would love to contribute or show their support. I am so excited to get going on this and would LOVE everyone and any one's in-put on what to post about. Below are just a few tips that I received from women who have shared their stories. Thanks again and keep the comments coming they are really helpful.

Thanks to a new comment lead and to a dear friend of mine this information was given. For anyone who has taken Clomid this is a great supplement.
The product is called FertilAid and the website link is -
early-pregnancy-tests.com
Below is the info...

FertilAid is the nutritional supplement designed to enhance reproductive wellness, support fertility, and optimize your odds of conceiving - in women's and men's formulas. FertilAid for Women integrates chasteberry and a spectrum of vitamins to promote hormonal balance and regular ovulation. FertilAid for Men has been clinically-proven to support male fertility, sperm count motility. Safe, scientifically-validated, doctor approved!

Enhance fertility and optimize your chances of conceiving with FertilAid or Fertility Blend - formulated on the basis of established scientific literature to help optimize fertility safely. Ob/Gyn Doctor Approved, our fertility blend supplements are designed to promote fertility and support reproductive wellness - naturally! See our newest additions, FertiliTea fertility tea and FertileCM!

Because infertility issues are likely to touch both men and women equally, Dr. Grunebaum's FertilAid supplements and Fertility Blend are available in special His and Hers Value Packs.

The website also has a link to buy high sensitivity, early detection pregnancy tests. The tests can detect when you are pregnant sooner. I am definetly ordering these. I have the bad habit of taking a test when I'm one day late and then taking another two days later. Needless to say I have wasted a lot of money.

Discover when you are pregnant sooner! Our pregnancy tests are sensitive to 20mIU for early, accurate results.
Early Pregnancy Tests offers two varieties of reliable, early-detection pregnancy tests: the pregnancy test strip (the same style of test used in clinics) and the midstream test (the same style sold in drugstores). All pregnancy tests are over 99% accurate.

Both tests are capable of detecting human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG (a hormone present in women's urine during pregnancy) at levels of just 20 mIU/ml/hCG. That means you can begin testing accurately as early as six to eight days after conception - well before your first missed period!

If you are fertility charting, and you know your ovulation date, you may begin testing as early as 7-10 DPO (days past ovulation) when the hCG level in urine will, on average, reach 20 mIU/ml. We recommend using a first-morning urine sample as this will contain the highest concentration of hCG.

PCOS
This is something I had never heard of and was so interested to read about the details. Thanks to a comment for this lead.

What is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?
Polycystic (pah-lee-SIS-tik) ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a health problem that can affect a woman's menstrual cycle, ability to have children, hormones, heart, blood vessels, and appearance. With PCOS, women typically have:

high levels of androgens (AN-druh-junz). These are sometimes called male hormones, although females also make them.
missed or irregular periods
many small cysts (sists) in their ovaries. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs.
How many women have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?
About one in ten women of childbearing age has PCOS. It can occur in girls as young as 11 years old. PCOS is the most common cause of female infertility (not being able to get pregnant).

What causes polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?
The cause of PCOS is unknown. Most researchers think that more than one factor could play a role in developing PCOS. Genes are thought to be one factor. Women with PCOS tend to have a mother or sister with PCOS. Researchers also think insulin could be linked to PCOS. Insulin is a hormone that controls the change of sugar, starches, and other food into energy for the body to use or store. For many women with PCOS, their bodies have problems using insulin so that too much insulin is in the body. Excess insulin appears to increase production of androgen. This hormone is made in fat cells, the ovaries, and the adrenal gland. Levels of androgen that are higher than normal can lead to acne, excessive hair growth, weight gain, and problems with ovulation.

Does polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) run in families?
Most researchers think that PCOS runs in families. Women with PCOS tend to have a mother or sister with PCOS. Still, there is no proof that PCOS is inherited.

What are the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?
Not all women with PCOS share the same symptoms. These are some of the symptoms of PCOS:

infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding
infertility (not able to get pregnant) because of not ovulating
increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toesa condition called hirsutism (HER-suh-tiz-um)
ovarian cysts
acne, oily skin, or dandruff
weight gain or obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist
insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
high cholesterol
high blood pressure
male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
patches of thickened and dark brown or black skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs
skin tags, or tiny excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area
pelvic pain
anxiety or depression due to appearance and/or infertility
sleep apneaexcessive snoring and times when breathing stops while asleep
Why do women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have trouble with their menstrual cycle?

The ovaries are two small organs, one on each side of a woman's uterus. A woman's ovaries have follicles, which are tiny sacs filled with liquid that hold the eggs. These sacs also are called cysts. Each month about 20 eggs start to mature, but usually only one matures fully. As this one egg grows, the follicle accumulates fluid in it. When that egg matures, the follicle breaks open to release it. The egg then travels through the fallopian tube for fertilization. When the single egg leaves the follicle, ovulation takes place.

In women with PCOS, the ovary doesn't make all of the hormones it needs for any of the eggs to fully mature. Follicles may start to grow and build up fluid. But no one follicle becomes large enough. Instead, some follicles may remain as cysts. Since no follicle becomes large enough and no egg matures or is released, ovulation does not occur and the hormone progesterone is not made. Without progesterone, a woman's menstrual cycle is irregular or absent. Plus, the cysts make male hormones, which also prevent ovulation.

Does polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) change at menopause?
Yes and no. Because PCOS affects many systems in the body, many symptoms persist even though ovarian function and hormone levels change as a woman nears menopause. For instance, excessive hair growth continues, and male pattern baldness or thinning hair gets worse after menopause. Also, the risks of complications from PCOS, such as heart attack, stroke and diabetes, increase as a woman gets older.

What tests are used to diagnose polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?
There is no single test to diagnose PCOS. Your doctor will take a medical history, perform a physical exam, and possibly take some tests to rule out other causes of your symptoms. During the physical exam the doctor will want to measure your blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and waist size. He or she also will check out the areas of increased hair growth, so try to allow the natural hair growth for a few days before the visit. Your doctor might want to do a pelvic exam to see if your ovaries are enlarged or swollen by the increased number of small cysts. A vaginal ultrasound also might be used to examine the ovaries for cysts and check out the endometrium, the lining of the uterus. The uterine lining may become thicker if your periods are not regular. You also might have blood taken to check your hormone levels and to measure glucose (sugar) levels.

How is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treated?
Because there is no cure for PCOS, it needs to be managed to prevent problems. Treatment goals are based on your symptoms, whether or not you want to become pregnant, and lowering your chances of getting heart disease and diabetes. Many women will need a combination of treatments to meet these goals. Some treatments for PCOS include:

Birth control pills. For women who don't want to become pregnant, birth control pills can control menstrual cycles, reduce male hormone levels, and help to clear acne. However, the menstrual cycle will become abnormal again if the pill is stopped. Women may also think about taking a pill that only has progesterone, like Provera, to control the menstrual cycle and reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. (See Does polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) put women at risk for other health problems?) But progesterone alone does not help reduce acne and hair growth.

Diabetes medications. The medicine metformin (Glucophage) is used to treat type 2 diabetes. It also has been found to help with PCOS symptoms, although it is not FDA-approved for this use. Metformin affects the way insulin controls blood glucose (sugar) and lowers testosterone production. Abnormal hair growth will slow down, and ovulation may return after a few months of use. Recent research has shown metformin to have other positive effects, such as decreased body mass and improved cholesterol levels. Metformin will not cause a person to become diabetic.

Fertility medications. Lack of ovulation is usually the reason for fertility problems in women with PCOS. Several medications that stimulate ovulation can help women with PCOS become pregnant. Even so, other reasons for infertility in both the woman and man should be ruled out before fertility medications are used. Also, there is an increased risk for multiple births (twins, triplets) with fertility medications. For most patients, clomiphene citrate (Clomid, Serophene) is the first choice therapy to stimulate ovulation. If this fails, metformin taken with clomiphene is usually tried. When metformin is taken along with fertility medications, it may help women with PCOS ovulate on lower doses of medication. Gonadotropins (goe-NAD-oh-troe-pins) also can be used to stimulate ovulation. These are given as shots. But gonadotropins are more expensive and there are greater chances of multiple births compared to clomiphene. Another option is in vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF offers the best chance of becoming pregnant in any one cycle and gives doctors better control over the chance of multiple births. But, IVF is very costly.

How can I cope with the emotional affects of PCOS?
Having PCOS can be difficult. Many women are embarrassed by their appearance. Others may worry about being able to get pregnant. Some women with PCOS might get depressed. Getting treatment for PCOS can help with these concerns and help boost a woman's self-esteem. Support groups located across the United States and on-line also can help women with PCOS deal with the emotional affects.
