the modest and cautious steps that Obama has taken. But its not clear to me that Cheneys critique will have enough to latch onto: unless a prisoner released to the Bahamas smuggles a nuclear weapon into the United States or a lead generated by torture is not followed up because of the poison tree doctrine Obama would be in command of events enough to ensure that his policies arent blamed. And given the massive blowback that will certainly accrue if a politician is seen to be using a national tragedy as a political weapon, its possible that a move by Cheney under the circumstances would backfire.
I dont think there are many out there who disagree that Cheney has set up this poisonous trap allowing him and other Bush administration apologists to blame Obama for the attack they all were sure was coming from September 12 until the day they left office and which they are now sure is going to occur under Obama. Though I think many on the left and right pessimisticly disagree with my belief that Cheneys plan will backfire.
Even so, any responsible politician must try to mitigate the damage that would be done to them under these circumstances. By declaring we are no longer at Obama would be instead increasing the damage done to him in the event of an attack. And indeed, Obama would be setting up his less extreme approach to be discredited if he describe as  a step down from Bushs war approach.
If nothing else, Obama, in maintaining that we are still at war, but changing how the government is waging that war is hedging against an attack.
Second, on policy grounds. After September 11, there was a widespread shock at the scope of the attack. There was a realization that several factors had made our society more vulnerable to terrorism than at previous points in history: the empowering of individuals in a globalized, technological world, as made especially evident by weapons of mass destruction; the insulating effects of the combination of global communication, reactionary religion, and the internet; the ubiquity of media delivery and production.
This situation has created unprecedented vulnerabilities vulnerabilities which previously could only be exploited by nation-states. This leaves us as a society now always vulnerable in a way we have previously only been in time of war.
Whether we call this state of readiness, of awareness that our society is in jeopardy, or the reality is the same. But the truest and most politically useful way to understand this state is as a war of our entire society (rather than our government) to protect the American way of life. While the words here may be similar to those that Bush used, this is not a reason to do away with them. Rather, instead of using words as mere political weapons we should take them seriously. We must determine what it is that makes our society what it is free, dynamic, fun, individualistic and strive to protect these values even in a state of war.
I think the problem is that many liberals, progressives, and others on the left and libertarians on the right have convinced themselves that terrorism is not a serious threat. (Maybe Im wrong but bear with me for a moment.) Certainly these groups often make the argument that terrorism is not as serious of a threat as it is made out to be and they make many good points on this front. Yet, despite this, they have made relatively little headway.
The reason these arguments arent taking hold is the same reason Iran will never be the same now that the people have proven their power by taking to the streets in defiance of the Supreme Leader because now that people know it is possible, it will be done again. Through a combination of luck, hard work, distraction, and military action, our military, our intelligence services, and the Bush and Obama administrations have prevented another attack on American soil. And God willing, this will continue. But I cannot help but believe that at some point someone will try and succeed in another spectacular attack. More important, given the power non-governmental organizations now have in our society with technology such as it is, and given the power of America in maintaining the status quo around the world, some group will declare war and more successfully wage a war of terrorism on America whether this group be Al Qaeda or another.
Why do I believe this? Because the technology is there. Because the will is there. Because the social dynamics are there. And because a group such as this now has an example to follow.
We need to prepare for this as a society or we could easily be destroyed as a society not likely by the weapons of such terrorists but by our unconsidered reaction. Just as September 11 demonstrated to some terrorist group in the future what a success might look like, so the Bush administrations reaction to a great degree demonstrated how a poorly thought out response could undermine our liberties at home and our power and interests abroad.
Liberals and progressives have tended not to discuss policy with the thought in their minds: What then, after another attack? Avoiding this line of thought is a bad habit formed after years of Bush constantly invoking it and using it as an implicit and explicit political weapon. It is necessary to think past that step and to create policies that will survive another attack.

We must act now and decisively if we want to realize a significant health care package by 2010 that can alleviate massive health care burdens for ourselves and our community neighbors.

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said that “of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” Today, in February 2009, with President Barack Obama in the White House there are some who suggest that we live in a “post-racial” society. In this era of historic firsts, some question whether Black History Month has been rendered obsolete. While we joyfully acknowledge the progress our nation has made in terms of civil rights and opportunity for all, we have only to consider the quote from Dr. King to see that race still plays a role in the lives of all Americans.

African Americans have nearly twice the occurrence of others for low birth weight babies, fetal deaths, and infant deaths. Infants that die in the first 27 days of life occur at a rate of three times that of whites. And also according to the Center for Health Disparities at the University of Northern Iowa, African Americans have a higher rate of diabetes than other populations. But whatever the disease or injury is, in almost all cases, African Americans suffer higher mortality and morbidity rates than any other group. But why is that?

The simplest explanation is that many of the issues that prevent African Americans access to health care are the same financial ones that keep people of all races out of the health care system. However the problem looks even worse for Black Iowans as a group. On average, African Americans earn nearly 40% less than whites, and are four times as likely to live below the poverty level. Compounding the problem, around 70% of African American families in poverty have a single woman as the head of the household, and in the absence of another partner to help shoulder the financial and familial load, she must perform the delicate balancing act of taking care of her family while determining which bills get paid, and this is not always an easy choice. Lack of insurance coverage, lack of transportation, limited hourly access to clinics, and a general lack of knowledge of the health care system all contribute to this problem of access.

Because of this limited access, African Americans are also less likely to seek treatment for major health problems in a timely manner, and will often wait until the problems become more severe and complicated to treat. If we are truly serious about achieving cost savings by getting people better up-front and preventative care, this is an issue that will have to be addressed in any significant health care reform, either at the state or federal levels.

The historical legacy of racism, illegal and legal segregation, unethical scientific experiments, and other abuses have made many African Americans distrust our health care system. The Tuskegee Experiment debacle may seem like ancient history to many Iowans, but such histories are still fresh in a lot of minds and are passed down from generation to generation with real meaning to many in our community. It should be no surprise that the two populations that have the worst health status in America, Native Americans and African Americans, also are the two populations that have suffered the worst mistreatment by the majority population.

Before we can find a solution, we must correctly identify the problem. Before we can turn the page on history, we must read what’s on that page. And the reality of race-based disparities in health care in America is a story that many people do not know. And problems that face African Americans and other minorities in gaining access to the best quality health care are multiple and complex. Real equality of opportunity for all people requires that we reform our state and national health care systems tofocus not only on coverage, but this reform must also focus on the severe racial discrepancies in health care quality, cost and access that arise from what are known as the “social determinants of health,” such as income, education, social and physical environments.

So where should we go from here? With 47 million uninsured in America, this is the civil rights cause of our time. Get involved, write letters, make calls to your elected officials, and organize others, because this is a fight that will take the collective energies of all of our communities - urban, rural, black, brown, and white - to win.

There was a revolution in Iran in 1979 but did the people get what they wanted? It's said that the revolution against the Shah was against the monarchy, and for communism. This never happened, and it is believed that this was due to interference from the West. Islamic Rule was established. Now there is upheaval again, with the people taking to the streets, demanding that the election be annulled. In this context it is worth reading Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis. It gives one an insight into life in Iran. It is autobiographical and she tells her story through cartoons she has drawn herself. The sketches are simple and so is the language. There is humour, drama, emotion, feminism, and the history of a people and a nation, all in one.

I promised I would write about what its like to work in the West Wing of the White House. After more than six years of working there, the process details seem less than fascinating to me, but conversations with friends suggest that even routine process explanations might be interesting to some readers.
I should qualify this by acknowledging that each White House is different, reflecting both the character and the management style of the particular President. I was tremendously privileged to work for one President (George W. Bush) under two Chiefs of Staff (Andy Card and Joshua Bolten), from August of 2002 through January of 2009.  I do not argue that the Obama White House should do things the way that we did, or that our way was better.  I am merely describing how we did it for those who might care.   So for all you CSPAN junkies and West Wing watchers, here is the first in a series of posts about some process mechanics of working in the West Wing of the (Bush 43) White House.
Commissioned Officers
White House staff can be divided into two groups:  commissioned officers, and everyone else.  As a technical matter, a commissioned officer works for the President, and everyone else in the White House works for a commissioned officer.  There are three levels of commissioned officers.

PHI should have significant, even dramatic impact on the state of the health care , in any country where it is widely adopted, depending on how fast and how well its development and spread is managed. While the primary focus of PHI is on individuals and populations health behaviors, and its primary goal is the optimization of peoples , there should be significant reductions in the incidence and prevalence of disease and injury, and thereby reductions in the use of and spending for sickness care, as well. Such a reduction would be in addition to expected health reform improvements aimed at reducing waste, overuse of care, over-charging for care, improved quality and safety, etc.

There have already been many examples of strong arguments and evidence for blaming providers of services and producers of products for many of the systems problems. In their drives for profits, or even just for enough revenue to enable their survival, providers and producers have engaged in dozens, if not hundreds of actions and practices that are aimed at their own benefit, despite their lack of benefit, and even measurable harm caused to their patients and public. The sheer amount of unnecessary care and operational waste has been estimated as anywhere from 20% to 50% of total health care expenditures. [M. Mahar Money-Driven Medicine: The Real Reasons Health Care Costs So Much Collins 2006]

While there has certainly been significant voluntary overuse and over-expenditure by consumers buying worthless health products and services on their own, spending intended to prevent, delay, or reduce the intensity of disease and injury has generally held at less than 5% of total spending. Arguably, the entire system is horribly misaligned with what is best for us as consumers as well as spenders, and devoted to caring for far too many cases of sickness and injury that could and should have been avoided. [S. Brownlee Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine Is Making Us Sicker and Poorer Bloomsbury 2008]

The fact that emphasis on health promotion, protection, and improvement has emerged so recently as a significant focus for employers, governments, and commercial insurers, compared to the far older and greater emphasis on treating sickness, has been convincingly laid at the feet of providers and producers. For physicians and hospitals, the law of the hammer (When youre holding a hammer, a lot more things look like nails), together with dependence on doing more and more expensive things in order to generate revenue, has led to virtually uncontrollable inflation in health care use and spending. Patients do not have much say in how much care they and are not much hindered by having to pay for it out of pocket, so no free market has kept the supply and demand for care in check.

PHI can reform the system only marginally, without a lot of help from other interventions. One of the greatest may be the introduction of comparative cost-effectiveness, or as two authors recently described it, value-based competition. [M. Porter E. Olmstead Teisberg Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results Harvard Business 2006] The medical profession has long jealously guarded its autonomy, despite having already lost a great deal of its power to payers and consumers over the years. It objects even to proposals for comparative effectiveness. These authors call for comparative cost-effectiveness, which should annoy the profession even more.

As they describe it, results value-based competition would be aimed at improving the health outcomes value per dollar expended, where providers in general are driven to promote merely added revenue. By making available the relative performance of competing providers -- based on results/cost relationships -- and ensuring that consumers, purchasers, providers, and producers are all driven to optimize these relationships through competition real reform would emerge. The better/best providers along with the better/best health interventions would drive out lesser options or force lesser options to improve.

Payers could intervene even in a competitive market solution, since they compete with each other for clients. Insurers have used the BestDoctors firm to review physician-generated treatment plans for complex cases, resulting in modified diagnoses in 22% of such cases, and of treatment plans in over 60%/ with 27% reduction in permanent disability and avoidance of one or more surgical procedures in 63% of patients (p. 260). Competition could prompt hospitals to seek outside advice, such as is offered by CarePath in traumatic brain injury cases, where ER physicians feel the need for coaching (p.122).

The same dynamic that would apply to sickness care comparative cost effectiveness systems should apply equally well to PHI. There is at least as much variability across providers of PHI services in terms of the they use to promote health and wellness, prevent or reduce health risk behaviors and risk conditions, and manage chronic diseases. And the prices charged by such providers vary far more than prices for sickness care. Moreover, the used in value-based competition for sickness care will necessarily be , i.e. treatment outcomes gains compared to dollar costs. By contrast, the value of PHI can often be calculated based on dollars gained for dollars spent, where benefit/cost ratios and return on investment (ROI) ratios and amounts require only elementary math/

This is particularly true for PHI clients, whether governments, commercial insurers or employers. The dollars gained by such clients will consist of reductions in sickness care expense for insurers and government, with the addition of labor cost reductions and revenue gains for employers. These gains can be translated into net gain value by subtracting PHI expenses and fees paid from such gains, while the ROI ratio equals gains minus such expenses and fees.

For PHI participants, value gained is more complex, since it includes the personal, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) benefits experienced. But for employees in particular, and even insurance plan members who can gain financial incentives for healthier behaviors or improved performance, there will be the opportunity to calculate similar gains, relative to whatever time, effort, inconvenience, and other they incur in the process. This makes it potentially that much more useful if PHI participants are eligible for and can qualify for financial gains based on their behavior, improved health, or best of all, improved performance.

The potential for financial gain is already recognized as a major driver of the health care systems problems, with providers and producers, along with payers, pushing for their own financial gains or survival. It would only be proper, considering how much financial gains affect human as well as organizational behaviors, if they were consciously, effectively and efficiently used in promoting the solutions.

ncluding one which would extend  tax hikes for two years, shows that even citizens in California are willing to tolerate reduction in services in order to hold the line on state spending one of the core ideas of the GOP resonates with voters.  The referendum results show that budgetary restraint is a winning issue.
But, it wasnt just the defeat of the budget measures which provide signs of hope for the GOP.  While perennial politician and ardent left-winger Paul Koretz clings to a 335-vote lead over David Vahedi for the District 5 seat in City Council, the fact that the margin is so close in a very, very liberal district.  To be sure, Vahedi is not a Republican, but he had built of coalition of neighborhood activists and other concerned citizens upset at the status quo in the City.  He ran at the outsider fighting a liberal City Hall.
The real sign of hope for the GOP though came in the race for City Attorney, when San Pedro lawyer Carmen Trutanich shellacked City Councilman Jack Weiss, the more liberal candidate who was backed not just by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, but also by the Democratic Party and labor unions.  Those unions ran harsh ads attacking Trutanich alleging he represented polluters.  But, thse ads didnt seem to resonate.
Despite the assistance he received from the Mayor and the labor unions, Weiss lost by over ten points.  It wasnt even close.
What these elections indicate is that certain ideas which have long defined the GOP resonate with voters, even in states like California, even in liberal cities like Los Angeles.  Yesterdays results suggest that should the GOP returns to its principles and run against machine politics with reform agenda, they could see themselves returning to the majority, even if jurisdictions where they have long been written off.

Nobody likes credit card companies. Never mind that they make our lives easier, by making our budgets more flexible and opening opportunities for financial control that our parents never dreamed of having, it's the politically correct thing to trash them. Even the executives of those companies have been acting like they were lower on the moral value meter than companies selling liquor, tobacco, porn, or political advertising. This is not to say that credit card companies and the banks behind them have all been saints and model citizens, but throwing all the blame on them is not merely unreasonable, but a poor plan for improving the future of credit.
Credit is all about risk. Let's say you have a buddy who wants you to loan him $50 until the next paycheck. If you do, you're granting him credit. It's not hard to understand that you will have different levels in mind. You might not mind giving money to your spouse and kids, you might agree to loan a buddy some money interest-free for a week or two, but outside that circle, you'd probably want something for your trouble, especially since the further away from center you get, the less you can trust that the borrower will pay you back quickly or in full ... and in some cases, at all.
That's why credit cards exist. You have the choice of carrying around a lot of cash, giving someone access to your bank account with a debit card or checking account, doing without because you don't have the money for what you want (and sometimes need), or you carry a card that will bill you later for your purchases. What's really sweet about credit cards is not only that you can buy all sorts of things with them, but that a credit card builds a history you can use to buy important things like a car or a house, and if you pay the balance in full each month it costs you only the annual fee to use the card. Credit cards build a reputation of financial responsibility, and they offer convenience and security that cash-alone cannot offer.
So why the hostility? Basically, human habits. We live in a society that often punishes success and forgives failures, and in some cases even protects failure by punishing those who would hold individuals to their commitments and the consequences of their decisions. A lot of people carry balances on their credit cards each month, and they resent having to pay the finance charges those cards require, even though in almost every case the individual was presented with the terms clearly and directly before they started using the card. Some folks pay their cards late, and resent the late fee they earn. The Obama Administration is playing on those immature attitudes, demanding the credit card companies be punished because people cannot manage to pay their bills in full or on time.
The problem for the credit card companies, is that the business model cuts both ways here. These companies chose to sign up people who in some cases were bad credit risks - I mean really, there are credit card companies which sign up people several times for the same card, without once collating the information to track the rising debt levels and default risk. Just stupid, and even more so to imagine that such people can be led to start practicing sound financial behavior just because they get into trouble with their cards. The profit model of credit card companies, after all, depends on people carrying a balance and paying finance charges. If everyone started paying all their bills on time and buying only what they could afford, the credit cards would not be able to operate as a going business. It's the same reason that the government doesn't really want people to stop smoking; it's bad for their bank accounts.
The Obama Administration does not really want to go too far the other way, though. If credit cards were punished for their usurious tactics to the degree that the President's rhetoric implies, many of the banks behind those cards would abandon the business altogether, as it would become a poor risk for their capital. Discretionary spending would plummet even more, as consumers' desire to save would be accompanied by a dearth of credit providers for those still eager to splurge. Finding a steady and significant source for consumer credit would become more difficult than getting Obama to say 'Bush was right'. It just would not happen.
So, enjoy the show but don't expect much to change. Because when it's all said and done, only you really care about your own financial health, so you'd better not trust it to a politician or a corporation.

Everywhere across the globe, unwanted pregnancies, individuals infected with sexually transmitted diseases, practice of unsafe sex is so common. When these individuals are asked on what could be the possible reasons of their fate, most of them would blame their suffering to their parents. Some would say that they didn’t have proper guidance from their parents; others would say that their parents were never there to give them advice whenever they were encountering problems or when they had queries about sex-related issues and puberty. Is all the blame to be put on the parents? What could be the possible reasons why parents avoid teaching sex education to their children but instead rely on schools to educate their children about these matters? Let us see what these parents have to say.

Health care in the US

today many Americans are worry about health insurance they have in their bill. many of them worry about thing whether they are going to have an appropriate treatment or not with the bill that they have paid. the fact that the most private company doesn't want to bankrupt make any sense that the consumers do not get enough service. the thing that happens is too many people that have paid their insurance company always get denials when they need their insurance to fund the medical treatment with the serious illness. many of them get denial notification sent to their mailbox.

people get denial with the reason of the physical of their body; too tall, to fat, to short, etc. it doesn't make any sense for the people who need medical treatment for the emergency condition. most of them who didn't get medical treatment immediately or not intensively died. it is very worrying condition where health insurance are supposed to care people instead they make people die.

the high price of medicine is another problem in the US. people have to pay at least $20 to pay their medicine bill for every single time they see the doctor. that is so impressive remembering that the medicine in Latin America is so much cheaper than any in the US. in Latin America they just have to pay for five cent for the liquid eye drop, but here in the united states we pay about $105 for the same size of bottle. then in Latin America they pay about $215 average per year/person and people here pay $7000 average per year/person. the big difference amount of money a little makes sense that everything in the Us is more expensive than any other countries in Latin America. if we calculate them, we still pay more for less.

the other worrying problem is the unemployed. here is hard to get their health insurance. they have no mediator to the health insurance company that usually have been provided by the company where they work at. it is getting worse and worse if the poor people/unemployed even do not get their health care because they can not pay the bill in one time after they get treatment.

knowing that we have so may problems about health care, we should learn from the other country how to manage the budget to conduct health care in out country. in Canada, people can get their free treatment for the injury, either in European country such as France, England, etc and even in Latin America. they got a doctor that comes to their home for emergencies. even they help people who do not have enough money to go to see their doctor. there is supposed to be a way for the US to get rid of this problem. one of the way is to make all health insurance controlled by the government, but it might not work, because there are too many private health insurance company in the US. the other way is to co-operate the government or private company to work together. they can help each other by doing cross subsidy. the other word is to make the private health care to be a semi-private company. so either the private company or government works together in managing their financial to take care all the people in the US.

other from above, the prior problem that should have been solved by the government is to make sure that all people in the US get their health insurance because not all people in the US do have their health insurance. then the government can take the one more step forward to handle how all people get their insurance evenly. so take one step to make sure that people get their insurance is the most important than we step further. in this way. it makes the government easier to make health insurance available for all. we do not want to hear more tears because people die. we do not want more tears because people feels bad of their diseases. so let us, as the society that concern much about health care, participate to support the government to make health care better and available for all.

Its become increasing clear that diets dont work. Most of the popular diets that people have tried over the past few years focused on restricting or even eliminating whole food groups. People lost weight on these diets and then, of course gained the weight back. Now there is a small and hopefully growing trend towards lifestyle diets.
Lifestyle diets focus on how one lives and then proposes easy to implement changes to help people to lose and most importantly keep weight off. This is very important because yo yo dieting is dangerous and may cause some serious health threats. A study done at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center by Dr. Ulrich found that the women who yo yo dieted the most had a lower number of natural killer cells. These killer cells are the cells in your immune system that aim at viruses.
The statement above does not mean that people should not try to lose weight. Obesity contributes to many disease states and is being considered as a separate risk factor when health care professionals evaluate heart disease risk. What this does mean is that people need to lose weight by making small changes that fit into their lives. Here are some principles that people can follow to make small changes in order to achieve permanent weight loss:
Plan Ahead
Portion Control
Fill Up With Fiber
Take 3 Deep Breaths And Drink Water
Balance Your Choice
Cheat
Plan Ahead: Eating mindlessly with no plan is like driving to a new destination with no directions. You need to have a plan for eating at home, work and while traveling or eating out. Fill your refrigerator with fresh cut vegetables and fruits so that theyre easy to get to. If you have to keep high fat and sugar foods in your home, put them somewhere where its difficult for you to get to and stay away from that food. Better yet, dont have it in your home in the first place. Buy pre-cooked lean protein, low fat high fiber cereals or low sodium, low fat frozen dinners so that there is always healthy food around.
Portion Control: This is one of the most important areas of any lifestyle diet. Some people refuse to eat rabbit food and have lives that socially revolve around food that isnt good for weight loss. These people will do best by significantly reducing their portions. Start by leaving a third of what you normally eat on your plate.
Fill Up With Fiber: Fiber is an essential part of weight loss because it makes you feel full and helps you with elimination. When purchasing cereals, check the label for a fiber number of over 5 grams. This will be under the carbohydrate section. You can also get lots of great fiber from fruits and vegetables.
Take 3 Deep Breaths and Drink Water: When you are about to binge and are eating out of emotion as opposed to hunger try this: stop and take 3 long and slow deep breath, exhaling as slowly as possible. Then drink a big glass of water and wait 10 minutes before you go for that binge. You just may skip it.
Balance Your Choice: This step has a small learning curve, but try to have a bit of a protein and a carbohydrate with every meal. This will help to control your blood sugar levels and insure more adequate nutrition.
Cheat: Everyone needs a break and if you stop eating all the foods that you enjoy, you will resent your eating habits and binge. Therefore, plan one day per week, it could be a special event where you allow yourself some of your favorite foods. Try to still be aware of portions when you do this.

These cases are tough on all involved, Defense Attorney Charles Wetherington said, And it is just regrettable that all three families involved in this case had to go through this.
When asked what he thought was the deciding factor in the outcome of the case, Wetherington stated, The character witness testimony was overwhelming. But even taking away the character evidence, just when you listen to the states theory of the case in that this occurred within his classroom in front of 17 other students it just did not make sense, especially in light of the fact that the classmates that were interviewed did not see anything happen.
Bennett released a statement through his attorney following the verdict and said, Please let the young ladies know that I forgive them and I wish them well.
Wetherington added that Bennett was understandably emotional following the conclusion of the nine-month ordeal.
The outpouring of support was like no other case Ive ever been involved in, Wetherington said. During testimony yesterday (Wednesday) every available seat on the defense side of the courtroom was taken, and today (Thursday) when the verdict was returned, every seat was taken by people who love him and know the real Jeremy Bennett.
Personally, I would like to thank all of those who have contact me over the past nine months and shared their familiarity with Jeremy and shed light on what a great guy he is. Ive received
unsolicited letters and phone calls periodically for the last nine months. I know of churches all around Valdosta of different denominations that have been praying for Jeremy. One of my character witnesses yesterday described him as a rock solid individual and I think that is a very good summation. I especially thank the teachers of Sallas Mahone in their steadfast and undying support of their colleague. I called close to 20 teachers at that school and I could have easily called another 20.
The verdict was made in spite of Assistant District Attorney Laura Woods argument that the two girls accusing Bennett had no reason to lie and that the defense attempted to distract jurors by focusing on the characters of the parents.
As Wetherington addressed the jury in his closing argument, he asked members to consider Bennetts testimony before reaching a verdict.
Mr. Bennett looked you in the eyes, told you his life story and told you with a straight face that he didnt do it, Wetherington said.
He added that Bennett was not a sexual batterer or a sexual predator before exploring the testimonies of character witnesses who described Bennett as a man of excellent character and a rock solid, good Christian man. Wetherington mentioned that Bennett must have had admirable qualities, especially since two of his ex-girlfriends came to testify on his behalf.
He worked as a bag boy at Publix and then at a Christian bookstore to put himself through college, Wetherington said. Even during Attorney Woods interrogation, he answered her with yes ma and no ma Thats the character of Mr. Bennett.
Wetherington then asked the jury to focus on the credibility of the prosecution witnesses. He argued that Beth Deloachs daughter simply lied about Bennett as a way of getting out of trouble. Since the account of events given by Deanna Folsoms daughter had changed between the time she was interviewed by the school counselor and the time she was interviewed by the Department of Family and Children Services, Wetherington suggested that she was coached to provide more information.
In addition, Wetherington pointed out various conflicts of interest, which include Folsoms position as a board member for the Childrens Advocacy Center, where both girls had forensic interviews, and Folsoms friendship with Valdosta City Schools Superintendent Bill Cason, despite the fact that Sam Allen was the superintendent at the time the allegations were made.

In Japan small and medium enterprises which process raw materials are profitable today. Fast food outlets, e-commerce service providers, and the pachinko gaming industry are doing well too.

Many companies are hoping to make money from the stimulus plans in their countries. Part of Thailand’s stimulus plan covers the distribution of checks worth US$55 to every low-income worker. The beneficiaries can use the checks to purchase items at McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut and 18 other major business outlets in the country. KFC even awards 20 pieces of free chicken to stimulus beneficiaries who exchange their checks for store coupons.

Some airlines are increasing their flights to service returning migrant workers. For example, Philippine Airlines increased its operations in the United States and Canada, which can be interpreted as a sign that more and more retrenched Filipino migrant workers are now returning home.

Condom sales are on the rise too as people want to prevent pregnancies during the recession. This is good news for condom makers but bad news for countries with declining birthrates.

Instead of reducing the workforce, some companies in the Philippines are adopting shorter workweek hours. Because of low occupancy in their buildings, some landlords in Manila are lowering the rates for office space. A Japanese company in South Korea used its savings and accumulated profits over the years to protect the living of its workers.

Roshni Mahtani, founder and editor of www.theasianparent.com, suggests that small businesses can save money if they give up office space, use open source software, replace traditional phone connections with Skype, hire interns, conduct virtual meetings and maximize social media marketing.

How are individuals around the world coping with the recession? The crisis is obviously affecting the physical and mental health of many workers. This explains why gym and yoga studios are overcrowded in Singapore. Singaporeans who want to release the economy-related tension, and those who have been retrenched, are now spending more time on exercise.

A Bulgarian weekly asked its readers how the crisis is affecting them. Some answered they have stopped watching TV since the news is depressing. Some have more time to read these days while others have taken more interest in the rest of the world.

A worker in Qatar discovered that the financial crisis can somehow solve shopping addiction. She now spends less time buying consumer goods due to delayed paychecks.

In Brunei bloggers are criticizing bankrupt individuals who wanted to receive surplus funds from zakat collections. The paying of zakat, one of the pillars of Islam, is an act of giving up a percentage of one's wealth to the needy. Many were surprised that Bruneians with big credit card bills, automobile loans, and personal loans attempted to tap the zakat funds.

There are those who are so overwhelmed with money problems that the only solution they can think of is to commit suicide. It is sad to learn that more than 70 diamond polishers in Gujarat, India, committed suicide after losing their jobs.

Others have chosen to fight. Investors, mainly in Antigua, who lost their money after U.S. billionaire Allen Stanford was charged with investment fraud banded together and formed a coalition to recover their wealth. The Stanford Victims Coalition created a website to update other members about their case.

Because of the recession, some are learning to appreciate the basic laws of doing business like providing first-rate service to customers. A Brazilian popcorn seller has won recognition for his creative ways of doing business. He has already given many lectures on entrepreneurship.

Agriculture is popular again among Japanese youth and celebrities as more people search for economic activities that have stronger foundations than the financial sector.

Cambodia has reaffirmed its reliance on agriculture to promote economic growth. A Lao economist believes that the “agriculture-based, self-sufficient nature” of the country’s economy will protect Laos from the global financial crisis. The economist added that “people who live in industrialized countries live in fear of losing their jobs because they can’t grow vegetables and raise animals as people can in Laos.”

In Jamaica leaders of 21 private sector bodies have formed a pact of cooperation to offset the impact of the worsening global economic conditions. They have relearned the value of creating a “social partnership dialogue” between the government, opposition, labor, business and civil society.

There is no evidence that dogs and cats can contract swine flu. Still, this is a new strain of swine flu virus, and investigators can’t rule it out until more tests are done. In the past, the avian H5N1 flu has infected domestic cats and at least one dog in Thailand, according to the scientific literature. In 2004, the equine H3 virus appeared to infect dogs. There have been no reports of dogs or cats spreading the flu to people. (from CNN)

Health insurance is big business in the US.The industryemploys thousandsupon thousands of people and is extremely profitable (think CEO). However, if England could implement a universal health care system after suffering throughthe casualties of World War II,we can do it in the midst ofour economic crisis. Some of the health care industry workers would be absorbed into the new system of healthcare. Others would not. This would cause hardships. However, the Wall Street fiasco and the auto industry problems are also causing hardships. The difference is that Americans would get something positive from universal health care: Health Care.In the long run, the system would run more efficiently. Imagine: no papers to fill out. Everything would be on computer. Imagine: no pre-approval. No complicated, inch-thickstack of forms to read through. Privacy? You would be at no greater risk than you are now of having your information hacked into. Your privacy would be protected. Your employer would not have access to your healthinformation without your consent. He doesnt have your passwords and cant hack into your computer savings or checking accounts. You would be safe. Papers need to be replaced, anyway. It was all well good, but we are also environmentally challenged right now. So, turning to electroic methods is moving in at precisiely the right time.

interesting observations regarding last weeks trial of Scott Sanders on the charge of searching a government computer without proper authorization. It should be noted that Sanders and Tom Fox also had been indicted on charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice, but these charges are now being dismissed. Think about the implications of the following statement Hammer made:
According to an impeccable source, those charges were going to be dropped whether Sanders was found guilty or not guilty.

What this means is that Tom Fox was being strung along by the state attorney generals office for nearly eighteen months even though there was no intention to prosecute him. Consider the ethics of that kind of decision-making, and what the motives may have been.

Hammer continues regarding the politics surrounding the trial:
Coman is a tough prosecutor, which is precisely why he is the top prosecutor in the Attorney Generals Office and why he was sent to handle the Duke lacrosse mess. Coman said Sanders was being treated just like anyone else accused of a crime, but the state doesnt, except in very special cases such as this one, send its top prosecutor out to prosecute class H felonies.

This was all about politics and the battle for the soul of Greensboro, and the administration of City Manager Mitch Johnson lost and lost big...

Comans very presence in the courtroom is proof that this was selective prosecution. Coman is not sent around the state to prosecute people for stealing pine straw or misbranding cattle. He handles the cases in North Carolina that Attorney General Roy Cooper considers the most important, and the trial of Sanders fell into that category...

The state never intended to bring this case to court. Sanders and Fox were supposed to roll over on someone higher up and then hopefully they would roll over on someone even higher up until they got something against Wray, or at least a member of his command staff. The problem with that plan was twofold, first of all Sanders and Fox are honorable men and secondly they didnt have anything to roll over about. Look at all the other investigations. Assuming that the SBI knows how to investigate, in 16 months this is all they could find.

When the charges were filed against Sanders and Fox, then Mayor Keith Holliday and Mitch Johnson made statements about how grievous these charges were. But they werent and it turned out the guys were not guilty of any wrongdoing. It would be shocking to see Mitch Johnson apologize for what he said, but Holliday certainly should.

I suspect there is much more to learn about the political influence and manipulation that affected the state Attorney Generals office and the SBI. But it appears to me from Hammers reporting that Tom Fox, even though he was not the focus of the trial, was done a terrible disservice. There may not have been a genuine intention to bring him to trial. Hammer felt Roy Cooper was hoping to get to Wray and his command staff through Fox and Sanders.

How will these two officers be compensated for what they were put through? It is increasingly obvious that they were the objects of politically motivated investigations, indictments-- and in Sanders case, an absurd trial.
In summary, Richard Burr needs to find a way to defend himself against the sharks, and to highlight the deficient record Roy Cooper has had as North Carolinas Attorney General, if he wants to be re-elected (and if Cooper runs). Burrs opposition in the media and the blogosphere will not be doing him any favors.

1. A problem with the MSM is that they are innately compromised by being large organizations. A stock character in literature is the newspaper reporter who can't print all that he knows because the publisher owes things to advertisers, it's bad politics, there's a risk of vehement complaints from the public, etc. Moreover, we have all met reporterswho fascinated us by saying things like, "Here's how it really is . . .," and if you ask why they don't say that in print, they give a lot of answers that are not satisfying. Now the excuse for this always was that a successful newspaper or radio or TV network of necessity had to be a large organization, simply to get heard. A guy with a mimeograph machine in his bedroom can't do that, (except that I. F. Stone did it). This led to a widespread feeling that what a consumer of news got was a sort of second-order reality, the filtered and compromised version. The better the news organization, one hoped, the less the filtering or compromise, but there was no way to eliminate it. This was evil but a necessary evil.

Mobile Internet is essential. I am a xxxx student and xxxx faculty to access U.Va. info would create a greater sense of community. Anything we do must be both Mac and PC compatible. Personal and administrative uses are important. However, educational potential is quite exciting. Consider Duke's original initiative. They let the 1st years loose with ipods equipped for recording and the students are creating a bottom up cultural change. If you need an interested user (but not a techie), I think this sounds like a fascinating project.
