Then there was the movie, "Intruder in the Dust," based on Faulkner's novel and filmed in Oxford (using residents of the town in crowd scenes and in some minor roles). What a stir it caused! The world premiere showing was in Oxford in 1949, at the Lyric theater (no longer a movie theater). I remember seeing this black and white movie then and delighted in seeing all the local folks that I knew, playing their parts.

Faulkner himself said it was one of the best movies he had ever seen. As well as I remember, it was a box office failure, but I would be interested in viewing it again now, not for the entertainment, but for the sake of considering the challenges issued by Faulkner to our values.

The Lyric theater was also where I saw the newsreel in 1950 of Faulkner receiving the Nobel prize for literature in 1949. Read his speech here.

I left Oxford in 1953, returned in 1958 and left again in 1962, before Faulkner died that summer. I almost feel that I was there on that hot July day to witness the funeral procession as it traveled around the square. I can see the procession, making its way to St. Peter's Cemetery where he was laid to rest.

Oxford has changed much since then, but I still see it the way it was, the way it was when Faulkner walked the streets of Oxford and I watched from afar. Does my heart long to return? You betcha.

Or rather, non-answers. Because despite Solid Energy's claim, no-one else seems to want to own up to funding it. Neither Genesis Energy (prime suspect 1), Treasury (prime suspect 2), or the Department of Conservation helped fund the NZIER's report on "The impact of the proposed Emissions Trading Scheme on New Zealands economy", and none helped pay for any related research. Treasury did provide a $15,000 annual grant to help fund the NZIER Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion (which asks businesses how they are feeling about themselves, and a perfect example of the low-quality spending Treasury thinks should be cut), plus a $6,000 annual membership fee, but didn't fund anything specific to climate change. They did note however that their Emissions Trading Group was transferred to MfE last year, and I'm still waiting to hear from them.

From my knowing and my little observation arround my environment, my neigbor and in my office almost all people especialy a man was very like of coffe . For years and years weve heard bad things about coffee. For example: its bad for your heart, increases blood pressure, may cause breast cancer, probably keeps you awake at night, and my personal favorite, has a poisonous gas when brewed. When the world of coffee addicts even gets a tiny hint that coffee could have something beneficial, believe me they dont just drink more coffee, they try to get everyone to join them. So, here we now have scientific studies proving to us that coffee has antioxidants.
Researchers have identified several compounds in coffee that create a coffee antioxidant. Why would this be of interest to us? Because scientific studies are showing that antioxidants may help prevent cancer. You see the connection here. However, until human studies are done, science cannot state exactly how much coffee must be consumed in order gain this protection against colon cancer or any other type of cancer. Before the coffee is roasted the antioxidant benefits are varied. However, once the coffee is roasted and served as a drink things get evened out. They all seem to have the same degrees of antioxidants.
Some studies suggest coffe having other benefits such as added fertility in a men and some benefits for those suffering from diabetes deases. you will have to read those studies on your own. The fact that coffe have antioxidant exists may be true, but the reality is that coffe can be just as harmful if your body doesnt like it, if you consume too much, if you have high blood pressure, and if it keep you at night.
Is there truly a coffee antioxidant? Yes, but the actual amount needed to be consumed in order to receive the anti-cancer benefits by humans is unknown. How exactly is coffee an antioxidant? be wise and please read your self the benefit of coffe.

![CDATA[ Welcome to Local Listens, where we profile some of our favorite Washington musicians. This week, we shine the spotlight on Kitty Hawk.
What was once a four-piece band in 2006 dwindled down to a duo and now survives as a solo project: DC native Chris Walker is the only man left behind the folk-rock outfit Kitty Hawk.

He explains that the reason for the diminishing lineup is that all of us are constantly changing shape. As long as Walker sticks it out, were okay with that.

Kitty Hawk creates calming tunes that can be borderline depressing but pretty nonetheless. Now that Walker is manning the project alone, the end result is slightly different, but he says the only noticeable change is the accompaniment of more bossa nova and samba beats on the keyboard.

Kitty Hawk offers several tracks on MySpace (be sure to listen to Monsoon Season and Move Me) and a few downloadable tracks on its Web site. Walker says hes always creating new music, but when asked when fans can expect a new album, he answers, Probably never.

For now, if you want to hear new Kitty Hawk tunes, that means tracking Walker down at a show. Hearing the real thing is better than a recording anyway, right?

Luckily, Kitty Hawk is part of the Federal Reserve collectivea group of like-minded emerging local artistsalong with bands and artists such as These United States, Laura Burhenn, and Vandaveer. The first Monday of every month, some of the Reserves bands and friends perform at Iota for $5.

Though Walker prefers more intimate, stageless venues, you can catch him at Velvet Lounge on December 9 (with PWRFL Power; 9:30; $8) and Iota on December 12 (Federal Reserve Holiday Show; 9 PM; $12).

We got the scoop on Walkers favorite part of the local scene, his plans for new years, his favorite venue, and more.

the fleet.
But Dee Caffari on board Aviva had a great start, maintaining a strong position amongst the leading group of Frenchmen. We stayed with them for some way, but as they made further progress into the Bay of Biscay we left them. Later the fleet faced headwinds of 20-30 knots and 4-6 metre seas and not surprisingly more drama would unfold.
THE FIRST 48 HOURS - a case of history repeating itself
The start of the Vendee is never easy and this year has proved no different. Currently nine boats have had to turn back and two of those have abandoned the race.
The fleet had a rough beginning hitting a storm head on, conditions have now settled for them as they made their way down the Portuguese coast. Dee Caffari commented that the first 48 hours had been physically and emotionally very tough.
She said she was concerned on how the weather had affected the boat, There was a lot of shipping around and the seas were horrendous. All that crashing into the waves wouldnt have done Aviva any good at all but she was really good and I havent found any damage as yet.
The skippers whove made it this far now can finally relax (well, relatively) and take some time out to eat and sleep. Mike Golding (Ecover) remains at the top of the British contingent and is only 41 miles from the leader. Hes 11th overall closely followed by Dee Caffari (Aviva), Sam Davies (Roxy) and Brian Thompson (Pindar).
Unfortunately for Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) a crack on the port side meant Hugo Boss started to take in water (Alex described as a mini-fountain), probably the result of residual problems after a fishing boat crashed into the boat a few weeks ago.
He arrived back in Les Sables dOlonne early Wednesday morning, fortunately safe and sound. He now has until Wednesday 19th November, 13:02 to make repairs to the boat and restart the race. Thomson is confident but its still unknown as to whether the damage is repairable. He however remains confident because in 2000 Mike Golding had to return to the start after his boat de-masted, Golding then restarted, overtook much of the fleet and ended up in a well-placed position.
The number of boats that have turned back is not surprising. On average only half the competitors finish this, the toughest of all solo sailing challenges.

Winston Churchill once said "Democracy is the worst form of Government ever attempted in the world. The only exceptions to this are all the other ones tried." Nick Murray once said something similar (paraphrased) "Buy and Hold is the worst form of investing ever attempted in the world. The only exception to this are all the other ones tried"

Some have questioned the wisdom of holding stocks when they are going down and that is understandable, why would we want to continue to subject ourselves to this form of punishment? The answer is that there isn't a better way to capture the long term superior return of stocks, except by holding them during the good and bad times. Keep in mind that the allocation to stocks should be within an acceptable range of risk for your goals. I've always told my clients about the 2000 - 2002 period when stocks dropped by 49% from their high (and the NASDAQ 80%) and that you should expect a 20% drop in stocks about once every five years and a 10% drop every two years. So when the market drops by over 40% twice in an eight year period, that seems to me to be excessive and a difficult way to earn money. While I agree its a difficult way to earn money, there hasn't appeared on the horizon a better way and don't expect one to come along.

Sure there will always be the people out there who tout their market timing strategies that supposedly get you out before the market drops and in before it goes up, but that's not really investing and it doesn't work over long periods of time. You may not lose as much during downturns, but you certainly won't make as much during the inevitable upturns.

Warren Buffet talked about market timing as one of those things that hurt your performance in his 2004 annual shareholder report:

"Over the 35 years, American business has delivered terrific results. It should therefore have been easy for investors to earn juicy returns: All they had to do was piggyback Corporate America in a diversified, low-expense way. An index fund that they never touched would have done the job.

Instead many investors have had experiences ranging from mediocre to disastrous. There have been three primary causes: first, high costs, usually because investors traded excessively or spent far too much on investment management; second, portfolio decisions based on tips and fads rather than on thoughtful, quantified evaluation of businesses; and third, a start-and-stop approach to the market marked by untimely entries (after an advance has been long underway and exits (after periods of stagnation or decline). Investors should remember that excitement and expenses are their enemies. And if they insist on trying to time their participation in equities, they should try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful."

He wrote just today (October 17th in the New York Times) the following:

"Let me be clear on one point: I cant predict the short-term movements of the stock market. I havent the faintest idea as to whether stocks will be higher or lower a month or a year from now. What is likely, however, is that the market will move higher, perhaps substantially so, well before either sentiment or the economy turns up. So if you wait for the robins, spring will be over."

If the greatest investor (who in January was Bullish on the American economy) in the history of the world can't predict short term movements, what makes you think your neighbor or some investment guy down the street can?

The hardest thing to do right now is the wisest thing to do, buy stocks. Warren also said in his New York Times piece "A simple rule dictates my buying: Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. And most certainly, fear is now widespread, gripping even seasoned investors. To be sure, investors are right to be wary of highly leveraged entities or businesses in weak competitive positions. But fears regarding the long-term prosperity of the nations many sound companies make no sense. These businesses will indeed suffer earnings hiccups, as they always have. But most major companies will be setting new profit records 5, 10 and 20 years from now."

If Warren Buffet is buying, perhaps our fear, while real, is a bit misplaced.

The key to a good portfolio is to set your asset allocation to a level where you are comfortable with the inevitable short term downward fluctuations (comfortable being a word that is relative). Most people aren't comfortable losing money at all, however the total return available to them after taxes and inflation will be about 2% if they're lucky if they take no risk (and right now if you buy treasuries you are guaranteed a negative return after taxes and inflation). Stocks should be expected to return two to three times that and provide a good hedge against inflation long term. Your biggest enemy in retirement is not stock fluctuation, but inflation. The slow killing off of your purchasing power in retirement will turn that golden nest egg to copper in the span of just a few decades.

These are tough times, there is no doubt about it, but America has faced such times before and come out of them better and stronger than before. A few months ago most people were fretting about the possibility of $200 oil...now oil is at less than $70 per barrel, a 50% decline. Things change and prices cycle, that is the nature of free markets (ok, somewhat free markets). We still have fundamental problems in our economy that no one is addressing (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Energy) and things aren't perfect, but things will never be perfect.

Buy and Hold may be the worst form of investing ever attempted, but is much better than all others ever tried.

Hang in there, this too shall pass.

As always, I'm available to talk.

Stix Blog: Project Twelve o'clock

  • Nov. 8th, 2008 at 9:24 AM

Thank you for coming here on this beautiful Arizona evening. My friends, we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly.A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him. To congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love. In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving. This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight.I've always believed that America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. Senator Obama believes that, too. But we both recognize that, though we have come a long way from the old injustices that once stained our nation's reputation and denied some Americans the full blessings of American citizenship, the memory of them still had the power to wound.A century ago, President Theodore Roosevelt's invitation of Booker T. Washington to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage in many quarters. America today is a world away from the cruel and frightful bigotry of that time. There is no better evidence of this than the election of an African-American to the presidency of the United States.Let there be no reason now for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on Earth. Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country. I applaud him for it, and offer him my sincere sympathy that his beloved grandmother did not live to see this day. Though our faith assures us she is at rest in the presence of her creator and so very proud of the good man she helped raise.Senator Obama and I have had and argued our differences, and he has prevailed. No doubt many of those differences remain. These are difficult times for our country. And I pledge to him tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face. I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together to find the necessary compromises to bridge our differences and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world, and leave our children and grandchildren a stronger, better country than we inherited.Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. And please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that. It's natural, tonight, to feel some disappointment. But tomorrow, we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again. We fought - we fought as hard as we could. And though we fell short, the failure is mine, not yours.I am so deeply grateful to all of you for the great honor of your support and for all you have done for me. I wish the outcome had been different, my friends. The road was a difficult one from the outset, but your support and friendship never wavered. I cannot adequately express how deeply indebted I am to you.I'm especially grateful to my wife, Cindy, my children, my dear mother and all my family, and to the many old and dear friends who have stood by my side through the many ups and downs of this long campaign. I have always been a fortunate man, and never more so for the love and encouragement you have given me. You know, campaigns are often harder on a candidate's family than on the candidate, and that's been true in this campaign. All I can offer in compensation is my love and gratitude and the promise of more peaceful years ahead.I am also, of course, very thankful to Governor Sarah Palin, one of the best campaigners I have ever seen, and an impressive new voice in our party for reform and the principles that have always been our greatest strength... her husband Todd and their five beautiful children... for their tireless dedication to our cause, and the courage and grace they showed in the rough and tumble of a presidential campaign. We can all look forward with great interest to her future service to Alaska, the Republican Party and our country. To all my campaign comrades, from Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter, to every last volunteer who fought so hard and valiantly, month after month, in what at times seemed to be the most challenged campaign in modern times, thank you so much. A lost election will never mean more to me than the privilege of your faith and friendship.I don't know what more we could have done to try to win this election. I'll leave that to others to determine. Every candidate makes mistakes, and I'm sure I made my share of them. But I won't spend a moment of the future regretting what might have been. This campaign was and will remain the great honor of my life, and my heart is filled with nothing but gratitude for the experience and to the American people for giving me a fair hearing before deciding that Senator Obama and my old friend Senator Joe Biden should have the honor of leading us for the next four years.I would not be an American worthy of the name should I regret a fate that has allowed me the extraordinary privilege of serving this country for a half a century. Today, I was a candidate for the highest office in the country I love so much. And tonight, I remain her servant. That is blessing enough for anyone, and I thank the people of Arizona for it.Tonight, more than any night, I hold in my heart nothing but love for this country and for all its citizens, whether they supported me or Senator Obama - I wish Godspeed to the man who was my former opponent and will be my president. And I call on all Americans, as I have often in this campaign, to not despair of our present difficulties, but to believe, always, in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history. Thank you, and God bless you, and God bless America. Thank you all very much.

RACINE If Max could talk, hed have a whale of a story to tell. How he got halfway across the country will remain the 2-year-old Maltese dogs private secret. After disappearing from a Florida home several months ago, Max turned up recently in Chicago.

On Wednesday, Racines Mary Palmer began the process of reuniting the dog with owner Richard Gonzalez of West Palm Beach, Fla. She heads the nonprofit Northcentral Maltese Rescue which coordinates placement of that breed of dogs across the country.

The group often deals with abandoned and abused dogs, Palmer said, but this was different. Gonzalez said the dog went missing from his daughters yard in Brandon, Fla., where she brought Max home for a few weeks to visit her own dogs. He reported it as a pet theft, a crime the American Kennel Club has noticed rising.

Even if he ran away, he wasnt going to get far. Its a subdivision, Gonzalez said. s going to grab him.

To his amazement, Gonzalez found out recently the pooch was located nearly 1,200 miles away. Chicago animal control workers identified Max thanks to an implanted microchip.

Financial pressures and hours at a new job complicated Gonzalezs efforts to get the dog returned home, so he contacted the rescue organization. A volunteer picked up Max from a Chicago shelter and handed the dog off to Palmer.

She trimmed away layers of matted fur Wednesday afternoon, then brought the dog to Belle City Veterinary Hospital, 4701 Spring St. There, veterinarian Brian Ray gave Max the clean bill of health needed to be allowed on a plane.

At least he looks like he was fed, Palmer said. s not emaciated. Palmer plans to put the dog on a flight Saturday, and other volunteers will transport Max on the final leg home, she said. Gonzalez cant wait.

I was ready to ask her, Can you put him on the phone? Gonzalez said.

The rescue organization has a Web site at http://www.malteserescue.homestead.

Of man meridian: The Du Meridian

  • Nov. 3rd, 2008 at 3:16 PM

The Du Meridian arises from the lower abdomen and emerges from the perineum . Then it runs posteriorly along the interior of the spinal column to Fengfu ( Du 16 ) at the nape, where it enters the brain . It further ascends to the vertex and winds along the forehead to the columnella of the nose . The coalescent points of the Du Meridian are Fengmen ( B 12 ) and Huiyin ( Ren 1 )
The Governing Vessel is the confluence of all the Yang channels, over which it is said to "govern." Because it controls all the Yang channels, it is called the "Sea of Yang Meridians." This is apparent from its pathway because it flows up the midline of the back, a Yang area, and in the center of all Yang channels (except the stomach channel which flows in the front). The Governing Vessel governs all the Yang channels, which means that it can be used to increase the Yang energy of the body.
Since the Governing Vessel is the "Sea of Yang Meridians" and it controls or governs the back, the area richest in Guardian Qi (Wei Qi), it is also responsible for the circulation of the body's Guardian Qi to guard against external evil intruders. The circulation of Guardian Qi starts from Fengfu (Gv-lG), and moves down the Governing Vessel to Huiyin (LI-l). It is said that it takes 21 days for the Guardian Qi to flow from Fengfu to Huiyin, and 9 days from Huiyin to the throat, making it a monthly cycle.
According to Chinese medical science, Guardian Qi is Yang Qi and therefore represents the "Fire" of the body. Its quick and ubiquitous circulation keeps the fire going in the body and controls the loss of body heat. Guardian Qi is also inextricably linked with the fluids that flow outside the channels, in the skin and flesh. Consequently, through the breathing (under control of the lungs), Guardian Qi is responsible for the opening and the closing of the pores, and also controls sweating.
The Governing vessel is also responsible for nourishing the five ancestral organs, which include the brain and spinal cord. This is one of the ways in which the kidneys "control" the brain, as is said in Chinese medicine.
Because of their importance to health, the Governing vessel and the Conception vessel are considered the two most important Qi channels to be trained in Qigong, especially in Nei Dan. Training related to these two vessels includes: 1. How to fill them with Qi so that you have enough to regulate the twelve channels, 2. How to open up stagnant areas in these two vessels so that the Qi flows smoothly and strongly, 3. How to effectively direct the Qi to nourish the brain and raise up the Shen, 4. How to effectively govern the Qi in the twelve channels, and nourish the organs, 5.
