Are you a pet lover? We people usually have their animal pet at house. Common pets that we took care are dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, white rats, etc. Animals are like people, we need someone who will love us and a doctor who will take care of us when we are sick. Animals and people have lot of similarities that is why as a first class animal (human) we are to take care of inferiors (animals and other creatures). Going back of being a pet lover. Are you? If you are, the you should be best friends with verterinarians because they are the one you can seek for help when your beloved pet is sick.
Veterinarian, if you arent familiar with this then you should know about them and I should tell what or who they are. Veterinarian or a Veterinary surgeon is often abbreviate as vet. It is a physician for animals and a practicioner of veterinary medicine. The word came from Latin which means working animals.
Diagnose animal health problems vaccinate against diseases, such as distemper and rabies medicate animals suffering from infections or illnesses treat and dress wounds set fractures perform surgery advise owners about animal feeding, behavior, and breeding euthanize animals when necessary provide preventive care to maintain the health of food animals test for and vaccinate against diseases consult with farm or ranch owners and managers on animal production, feeding, and housing issues treat and dress wounds, set fractures, and perform surgery, diagnose worms etc. Are some of veterinarian does.
I myself is a pet lover too. I have 3 pet at home since I was a kid. Late last evening one of my pet acts not so normal. As I see him, it looks like there is something different from him. Early this morning, I bought him to my vet friend. He was examined for minutes and the vet told me that he was sick. Sick because of what he ate last night. Because of that I need to buy some veterinary products and medicines. I hope he will get better soon.

This fun holiday idea is to get friends and family together for a holiday decorating party. Get a few people together to bake cookies, holiday pies or cute appetizers or finger foods. This helps guests to put old problems behind them and continue with a fresh and renewed spirit. The photos are placed on the page along with the person's name and a brief synopsis of what they're doing. Invite everyone else over afterwards to enjoy your tasty treats. Shop for holiday decorations and party supplies online to save time and gas. Each person gets one page of the book. Make sure someone is going to bring a Polaroid camera.

You love feeding your dog dont you? When they eat the food you have laid down for it, it always gives you an assurance that it is getting the proper nourishment it needs. However feeding is not always a happy scenario especially when your pet begins to growl at anyone when it is eating. Maybe the pooch thinks you will take its food away thats why it hates when you approach it at meal time.

Over the last month, your dog lost a few pounds, seemed a little listless and could not tolerate much exercise. When he decided he no longer felt like eating, however, alarm bells sounded and you had him to the vet the same day. Your vet ran some blood work, shot a few x-rays to back up the findings and now you are sitting in an exam room with your faithful companion and wondering how you missed the warning signs for cancer.
Cancer in dogs is an all too common problem and much like the human equivalent of the disease, there are so many types, treatments, grades, stages, and protocols the pressure to know what is best for your dog is intense and unrelenting.
Just what exactly is Cancer? In medical terminology it is known as , or new growth. Cancer comes in two basic forms- malignant or benign. Malignant tumors are the worst of the two. They invade, destroy, grow, and spread throughout the lymph and circulatory systems
Benign tumors grow in one area and do not invade or spread into other parts of the body. Benign tumors are also easy to remove because they have formed edges like an egg where malignant tumors can look more like an octopus with long tentacles. For an accurate diagnosis of whether a tumor is benign or malignant, your veterinarian or, preferably, a pathologist must examine a sample under a microscope.
Approximately half of all dog cancer is skin tumors; sixty percent is benign. The next most common form of cancer in dogs is mammary tumors, with half diagnosed as benign. Only ten percent of tumors in dogs are in the digestive system, ten percent in the lymphatic system, five percent in the reproductive system and the remaining five percent are a variety of types.
Some breeds of dogs are more prone to specific types of cancer than others. For example, large or giant breed dogs are more likely to develop bone cancer; large breeds such as the Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Standard Poodles while Giant Schnauzers are prone to hemangiosarcoma or malignant spleen tumors.
The basic terminology veterinarians use to describe dog cancer can be as confusing as how best to treat it. Terms like Stage, Grade, and Metastasis are daunting to an already scared layperson, but are simply basic descriptions.
You may recall your vet saying the tumor is in the stages, or that is a Grade 1, or that it has metastasized, meaning it has developed another place in your dogs body. There could be multiple sites! Grading is done on a scale of 1-4. A Grade 1 means the cancer is not aggressive; 4 means it will spread very quickly. Stage is used to notate how far along the tumor is. The lower the stage, the better the chances of recovery.
Dog Cancer Protocols: How you treat your dogs cancer is an important, and often heart wrenching, decision. Although chemotherapy is an option, research the type of cancer your dog has, the prognosis of the disease, and the overall advantages in trying radiation therapy. Second and even third opinions are a vital step in dog cancer treatment and if there is a canine oncologist available in your area, book an appointment for you and your four-legged friend.
Approaching cancer treatment naturally is often the most humane protocol for pets. If you have not already done it, clear away all possible carcinogenic materials from your pets area such as household cleaners, pesticides, insecticides, and other toxic substances. Use only metal or ceramic food dishes and serve only clean, filtered water.
If you take your dog to a holistic veterinarian, they will view your dog as a whole living, breathing organism. When all systems are in balance your dog is healthy. When he/she is not healthy (out of balance), their approach is to determine which parts of your dog are out of balance, and nourish them back to health with all-natural supplements, even if they have cancer! A healthy diet is critical. If you cant make the time to prepare your dogs meals then research the web for the best all-natural dog food, and fortify it by administering soil-based probiotics, vital pet lipids, minerals, and super pet enzymes for maximum digestion and nutrition absorption. In fact, even if you are giving them the best organic foods, they still need natural supplements to aid digestion and absorption, skin, muscle, and joint elasticity, as well as to maintain optimal digestive balance and intestinal flora. This regimin is especially important should you opt for chemotherapy and radiation.
The next step is the first step (along with finging and eliminating toxic chemical cleaners and air fresheners). Focus on your dogs digestive system. Not well known, but it makes up 80% of his/her total immune system! The other 20% relies heavily on the intestinal system being in balance to provide its nutritional requirements. You can spend a fortune on the finest cuts of meat, but if your dogs digestive system is not performing optimally, most of the meat will go to waste. Literally! The right compliment of supplements not only helps to overcome cancer, they provide your dog with precisely what he/she needs to live the longest, healthiest, and happiest life possible. Isnt that what dog ownership is about?
This is a good time to make an appointment with a dog nutritionist. Most holistically trained vets are well versed in nutrition. Antioxidants, soil-based probiotics, vital pet lipids, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, selenium, and zinc all help strengthen and support your dogs immune system.
Sunshine, exercise, and love are all vital to your dogs fight with cancer. Even if he/she is feeling sluggish, take them to a dog park. Encourage your dog to chase a ball or go for a walk. Dogs get depressed, just as we do. We all know how much a little exercise can help release natural endorphins and elevate our mood.
Cancer is treatable and researching the many choices your dog has available to them will help you to feel informed and educated about choosing the right path for your beloved pet. Whether it is a few weeks, a few months or, hopefully, a few years, make the time special, treat him with kindness and patience and always keep his comfort and happiness at the forefront of your mind throughout your days together.

Last week I published an article on keeping your dog cool during the summer. Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, your dog might overheat anyway. Its essential to know if this is happening though. If left ignored, your dog could have heatstroke, slip into a coma or even die - and this could all happen within 20 minutes.
The first signs of overheating include heavy panting, hyperventilation, increased salivation early then dry gums as the heat prostration progresses, weakness, confusion or inattention, vomiting or diarrhea and sometimes bleeding. When it is hot out, you should be watching your dog constantly to make sure he doesnt overheat.
At 105 degrees, heatstroke will set in. The three main signs of heatstroke are collapse, blood red lips tongue and extreme difficulty in breathing. At 110 degrees, the internal organs will become affected and cell damage will occur. At this point the dog may have a seizure, slip into a coma, or even die.
If your dog is overheating, take action immediately. Try to get your dog to drink some water. Move him into an air conditioned environment, if possible. Cool your dog with cool, but not cold water. If you dog has thick fur, continue to apply cool water. Blow fans on the dog when possible and apply ice to the groin area, arm pits and neck.
Fortunately, preventing heat stroke in dogs is easy if you apply the general guidelines for keeping your dog cool. Just remember, your dog is just as sensitive to heat as you. If you are hot, chances are he is too.

It is no real secret that exercise has a major effect on our health and wellness. Nowadays, medical professionals simply cant stress enough the benefits of a regular exercise program:
Controls weight
Increases energy
Improves circulation
Enhances lung capacity
Oxygenates blood
Improves heart rate
Builds strong muscles
Increases joint mobility
Improves your mood
Helps with sleep
The list goes on and on…
You may not have given it much thought, but our pets reap the same benefits as we do when it comes to exercise. Not to mention, a regular exercise program can help burn nervous energy and reduce boredom for your pet, making them less likely to destroy your property. Your cat may run through the house or bat around a toy on its own, and your dog may chase a squirrel in the backyard or play with his ball. But, this is the extent of their exercise program without someone’s help. That’s why it’s up to us as their caretakers to make sure they are getting the exercise they need.
Don’t worry, you aren’t going to get any whining, lame excuses or belly aching from your pets regarding exercise. The whole process is playtime in their minds and the bond that grows between you and your pet when you increase their “playtime” will make them love you all the more.
Be sure and consult with your veterinarian before you begin. Different pets have different needs when it comes to exercise. Large dogs are going to vary from small dogs and older animals are going to vary from younger animals. Plus, the vet can give your pet a routine examination to make sure their health is good and it’s safe to proceed.
Please keep in mind, too, that if your pet isn’t use to exercising you will need to start out slow and gradually increase over time. Just like people, pets can get sore muscles and strained joints or ligaments if they overexert themselves.
Exercising Your Dog
It’s a good idea to start with a moderately paced walk or swim for dogs, giving them a chance to build strength and stamina without straining muscles. Start with 10-15 minutes a day and gradually increase time and distance as the dog gets a little more accustomed to it.
Always keep an eye out for signs of fatigue and trouble breathing – excessive panting, rapid heart rate. And, be sure to keep plenty of water on hand. By all means, if your dog wants to stop, let him. That is a strong sign that he has had enough. Please keep in mind that most dogs love to burn energy and because of their enthusiasm and willingness to please their owner, they may not stop until it’s too late. Therefore, it’s very important to watch and know when enough is enough.
To keep things interesting, you may want to vary their forms of activity: walking, swimming, jogging, playing ball or chasing a Frisbee are great ways to keep them enthused. For a real change of pace, take your dog to the dog park to play with other dogs. He’ll not only burn lots of calories, he’ll get to socialize and make new friends, as well.
As a safety precaution, allow your dog to walk or jog on soft surfaces in the beginning. Soft or tender pads can become sore or tear under stress. Make sure nails are trimmed so they won’t hang or rip. And, always keep your dog on a leash to avoid traffic or other, more aggressive dogs.
If you exercise at night, consider a reflective collar or light on your dog, as well as a bright colored or reflective leash that is visible to passersby. Also, you’ll want to wear white or light colored clothing yourself to make sure you can be seen by others.
Exercising Your Cat
Getting your cat the exercise he needs is a little more challenging than the dog. Some cats can be trained to walk on a leash, but for most this is not a viable solution. Cats are designed different from dogs, too. Short frequent periods of intense activity are more beneficial to a cat than slower-paced exercise sessions.
There are a lot of wonderful toys you can purchase to help keep your cat active. But, before you spend a lot of money, you might look around the house. Many times, you’ll find plenty of things around the house to create hours of entertainment for your cat. Basically, cats like to climb, bat, chase, explore and scratch. So, if you work these elements into their routine, you should have some success.
Things to climb on and explore could be a kitty cat tower from the pet store or some boxes, suit cases and paper sacks. For batting practice, a shiny ball, stuffed mouse, old sock or wadded up piece of paper should do the trick. As for the chase, a string or laser pointer can work wonderfully. And, a scratching post, piece of cardboard or carpet will do for scratching.
You definitely don’t want to discourage your cat from scratching. This scratching motion will stretch and tone your cat’s shoulder muscles. But, more importantly, it will keep his claws active so that he is less inclined to shred your furniture.
For an interesting change of pace, you might consider walking or running up and down a flight of stairs or hallway with a string or rope attached to your belt loop. This will get the pulse rate up for both of you! Or, create a challenge for your cat by making him work for his dinner by putting small amounts of food on several plates and scattering them throughout the house at meal time. This will make your cat exercise in order to eat and freshen up some of those tracking skills.
Remember that exercise is every bit as vital to your pet’s health and well being as good food, clean water and shelter. A consistent exercise program will enhance your pet’s life in many ways. If your busy schedule finds you short on time, you might consider hiring a pet sitter. A pet sitter is more than happy to come out to your house and exercise your pets. They can walk or run with your dog, take him to the park or out to play ball in the back yard. They’ll even exercise and play with the cat. Your pets will absolutely love the extra attention and you’ll have peace of mind knowing that they’re getting the exercise they need.

Theres no denying that saving money is a hot topic these days. I know that most people read this blog to find out ways that they can cut down on what they spend yet still enjoy their day-to-day life. Today, though, Id like to suggest we flip that notion on its head. Instead of focusing on saving yourself money, how about challenging yourself to find two ways that you can do something for someone else to help them cut down their spending.
What do I mean?
Take five minutes today and do an inventory of your Can you figure out a way to bless someone else with something you no longer need, use or want? Do you have boxes sitting in your basement, attic or garage for that garage sale?
Here are three ways Im sharing the wealth this week:
* Putting books up on PaperBack Swap. These books came from a shelving unit in my younger daughters bedroom that wed cleaned out this past weekend. Shes outgrown the books, and now Im sending those books out to someone else for free (to them). Granted, by giving away my books, I earn points on PaperBackSwap to get free books. But Ill just consider that a kind of book-loving karma.
* Giving away items on Freecycle. Recently, we went to my mother in laws house for Sunday dinner (as we often do). When I brought something out to the trash, I noticed a large items sitting next to the trash can. It was a dining room table pad that my mother in law was throwing out. Ill admit that the pad was beat up and torn in places, and thats why she decided to buy a new one. But these pads are designed to go under tablecloths so I had a feeling that someone else might benefit from this used table pad. After getting her permission to snatch it from the trash and taking it home, I finally got around to putting the table pad up as an offer on Freecycle yesterday. Someone is coming by tomorrow to get it.
* Making in-kind donations to good causes. Once again my kids have managed to grow out of their clothing, and now Ive got three bags of perfectly good girls pants, shirts and dresses and no one to wear them. So tomorrow Im bringing these three bags over to the local church-run thrift store. Even though its called a thrift store, they actually give the clothes away to indigent families that need them. Sure, Ill get a tax write-off for my donation, but more importantly, Ill be allowing some girls out there to enjoy some decent clothing for which we no longer have a need.
How are you going to share the wealth today.

Rap and Hip Hop today has taken a huge leap backwards, which is actually a great thing to happen. When I say backwards I mean to the beginning of the entire genre of music. Back before there was the current mainstream of gangsta rap there were the diversified and influential styles of rap music.
From Grand Master Flash introducing the first serious rap song in 1982, The Message, there was a growth in the music that spoke to serious issues. This culminated in perhaps the strongest voice for political involvement and criticism from the rap hip-hop industry ever: Public Enemy.
They might not have been the most loved rap group among White America, or even people of color, but they were vocal. They took the entrenched political status quo and shouted for them to be accountable. They looked at African Americans and demanded we do better. That we become involved rather than be directed. And they had an effect.
In fact Public Enemy, along with serveral other rappers and groups, became such a force for change that the music industry stood up and paid attention. Their reaction has been denied for decades, excused and deflected. They found, pushed, and manipulated gangsta rap.
In the over a decade since 1992, gangsta rap has become the standard rather than a sub-genre it started as. It has almost entirely avoided any serious involvement in politics or political action. It has promoted violence, drug use, abuse of women, and crime. It has distracted the masses with illusions of wealth and giggling of female anatomy. The music executives did their job so well that even when leaders in the rap and hip hop industry tried to get serious about politics (2004) no one listened. And they were undercut from within with actions like that of Kanye West during the Hurricane Katrina Fund Raising efforts.
But then came President Obama. And the rap and hip hop industry rallied. Because President Obama is relatively young, a Democrat, full of promises, and most importantly (if we are honest) he is Black. And they jumped in with both feet, in an election more defined by a national breaking of the ultimate glass ceiling than most anything else.
Now I do not fault rappers or hip hop for this. I in fact am happy to see they have finally gone back to their roots and suddenly realized the power that was thrown away (or bought off) 17 years ago. The latest attempt to regain the past impact on politics is the Hip Hop Caucus.
The Hip Hop Caucus is a lobby group made up of rap artists, guided by the Congressional Black Caucus and supported in some issues by members of Congress. As of this moment they are seeking to have a bill introduced, with the support of Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Ed Markey. Their goals – green reform, education, re-entry legislation for prisoners, lessons on the Constitution in schools and funding for voter registration.
These are all good ideas (to varying degrees). The big question though is if Hip Hop is capable of making the transition back to where it started. Especially as the music genre continues on its path of glorification of violence, drugs, and abuse of women. Can it make money for music executives focused squarely on distraction of the masses, while encouraging the youth to become involved in the politics that shapes their lives?
I think not. To me only one master can be served at a time. Which means either Rap cleans up, potentially causing another backlash from the music industry, or the Hip Hop Caucus and other such groups fail.

Fleas Remedial agent | Pet Meds

  • May. 18th, 2009 at 12:21 AM

Buying generic is one way to lessen the cost when it comes to pet meds. Just as humans have generic medications, pets do as well. Ask your veterinarian whether generic brand medication is available for your pet. If you are looking for something like a flea control product, you could even check local pet stores and discount department stores to see if their products are cheaper than what your vet has to offer. While these brands may be well known names and not generic, they are still probably going to cost less than what is available from the veterinarian's office.
Using coupons is the second method you can use to save money on pet meds. This applies not only to items of a medical nature purchased from stores, but also medicine purchased from the vet. Some of the major companies whose products are available through your vet have coupons that can be found online or are even sent in the mail to customers on the mailing list. Ask your veterinarian if they know how you can acquire coupons or money saving deals on the products your pet requires.
Buying online is the third strategy in saving money on pet meds. The Internet is a fantastic source for bargains in every category including pet supplies and medications. There are companies like 1800PetMeds and Pet Care RX who offer deals and discounts on many commonly used pet medications. These companies and others like them will deliver the medication to your door, often for less than it would cost you to drive across town and buy it from the vet. Try searching for coupon codes before shopping online with any vendor, as this can reduce the price even more.

Gabby (aka: Gabbsters) is an amazing Basset Hound that has an equally amazing mother. I was commissioned to photograph Gabby last year after her mom realized that Gabby may not have that long to live. She was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and she was very ill at the time. When I met Gabby I knew right away that this lady was something special. When she was rescued by her mother she was already blind, but I can tell you this doesnt stop Gabby. She knew her way around and had a very keen awareness of everything around her. Fast forward 7 months later and we have a Gabbsters that seems better than ever. I will tell you what the secret is - she has a mother that is extremely devoted to her and loves her so very much. I have seen the tons of medicines administered and I have heard first hand all that Gabbys mom does on a daily basis. I was so very happy to have the opportunity to come out and give Gabby her very own special private session. The images are going to make a fantastic book that I know Gabbys mom will cherish forever. Thank you so much for including me in your lives.

Recent studies have shown that long-term use of the nutritional supplement, Glucosamine, can not only assist with DJD symptoms, but can possibly help to rebuild joint cartilage.
Chiropractic adjustments are not only sound, but an effectual treatment for arthritis, and can aid in the restoration of proper mobility and function to the spinal joints, thereby giving patients great relief. Your Chicago chiropractor has many of years of training in helping people with arthritis pain. Other forms of chiropractic care may include joint mobilization, massage, ultrasound, cold laser, or electro-therapy, all of which may be helpful in the relief of painful and stiff joints. On occasion a brace is required to help stabilize the joint in an effort to alleviate pain. A chiropractor may suggest exercises such as stretching, yoga, tai chi and other gentle mobilizing activities to help maintain arthritic joints.
Gout
Gouty arthritis is produced by high levels of uric acid in the blood and the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. The most common joints are the big toes, the knees, ankles and wrists, and is often characterized by acute pain and swelling. Many people who develop gout are predisposed through heredity, though episodes are generally brought on by binge eating of agitative foods, when dehydrated or fasting, or after a major surgery or illness. Particular foods such as red meat (especially organ meat), certain seafood, legumes, and mushrooms have the natural substance, Purines, that are metabolized in the liver to form uric acid. Since individuals with gout cannot effectively metabolize uric acid, the buildup in the bloodstream creates joint problems. In addition to the foods described and additional foods containing Purines, other dietary restrictions must be followed including the avoidance of alcohol.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of systemic origin. The direct cause is not known, but it is thought to be due to a problem with the immune system. The most common joints affected are the small joints of the hands and fingers, the feet, knees, and shoulder, though other areas of the body can be affected as well. Morning stiffness made more painful by movement is generally associated with the disease. Many times people complain of general malaise and fatigue, and the disease in its more advanced forms can affect many of the other body systems. There are specific blood tests to help identify Rheumatoid arthritis that can be easily run. Management includes medication and vitamin and diet therapy, as well as chiropractic adjustments. In addition, joint mobilization and modalities such as ultrasound, heat, electro-therapy and massage can help with the pain and stiffness associated the condition. Your Chicago chiropractor is dedicated to assisting individuals in getting relief from the pain and suffering associated with arthritis.

In my third week at the San Francisco SPCA’s Academy for Dog Trainers, I’ve been dancing to tune of Beverly Hills Chihuahua as I work to train Roscoe, the indelibly cute Chihuahua. Its a big difference in dog from the hyperactive, confident, and ecstatic Lab project I had the previous two weeks to my new 5-pound partner, to whom the world seems so big, as it would to any dog who reaches only to the height of my ankle.
I no longer need to take my project dog out on a daily run because Roscoe prefers being held in my arms as I carry him back from class, and would much rather sit on my lap than run. Both of my last two project dogs were “lap dogs,” but Tyler the kinetic Lab wanted to run laps around the exercise yard while Roscoe wants to sit in my lap.
Roscoe is shaking in typical Chihuahua style when he greets me in the morning, but as soon as I hook the leash on his collar small enough to fit Barbie’s lil’ plastic dog he rears, flinging his paws in circles as if doing an impression of “Hi–ho Silver!” He gallopst in front of me with an air of confidence as I hold steady on the reigns, or in our case, the leash. Little paws that print only about the width of my thumb prance on the ground as if he’s walking on a hot skillet when he reaches a steady lope, while I am still a walking at a comfortable pace behind him. Roscoe greets each person with a few swishes of greeting from his tail like a horse swatting away flies, and then he surges back into the race, cutting me off at the ankles and gaining the lead as we reach the door to our training room. By the time we reach the training pen, the short walk, which to me only takes about three minutes, is the equivalent of a five-kilometer sprint for Roscoe, who by that point is spent, and ready to begin our first training exercise, which involves a long down stay on a blanket.
After another rearing in the training pen, paws extending up towards the heavens NS Roscoe dances over to the wool blanket and plops himself into a down, expectantly awaiting the treats to come. By far the most difficult part of training Roscoe has been to keep him in a down-stay and at a distance from me, because HIS motivation is to be a companion and a friend. Treats are tasty, and for the tiny size of his little stomach, Roscoe really can throw them down the hatch, but Roscoe prefers company over treats.
In one exercise, I had to get Roscoe to leave another person who was holding his attention, while I called him from the opposite side of the pen. My partner was petting and playing with him, and I began yipping and shrieking and slapping the ground with my hands to get his attention. At first, Roscoe ran over to me with gusto, and I praised him and slipped some delectable cheese into his mouth. But after a few times of my partner petting him at the other end of the pen, and me trying to call him back for a treat incentive, Roscoe grew slower and slower on coming back to me, until he didn’t want to leave my partner at all. I was puzzled at why Roscoe wouldn’t gallop over for a chance at treats, but then I looked over at his little body arching his back into my partner’s hand like a cat, and I realized that what Roscoe was after most of all was affection.
The next time, I called him back to me, and after a long duration, Roscoe looked up longingly at my partner as if to say “I’ll be back for more rubs in a moment!” and dutifully walked over to me on the opposite side of the pen, his little feet dragging at a reluctant pace. As soon as Roscoe got to me, I showered him in a puppy party of treats, praise, and best of all, pets and hugs from me. The look on Roscoe’s face was unmistakable this time, as his tiny brown eyes widened and looked up at me with adoration, and he nestled his little body up against my chest to indulge deeper into the heavy petting. After that one experience, Roscoe didn’t want to even leave my lap again and would have to be coaxed over to my partner. He would turn 180 degrees the moment he heard my voice and bound in flying strides towards me, expectant of the hugs and petting he would receive.
With treats and praise not nearly as delectable as physical touch to Roscoe, the challenge of getting him to stay on a blanket for two minutes while I am on the other side of the training pen has been agonizing for the little man. So far, we’ve reached a 30-second stay on the blanket, visibly excruciating for Roscoe, who squirms and wiggles.
Thursday isour final test day, and the two-minute down-stay will be the ultimate test for our human-doggie team. However against Roscoe’s nature it may be to be separated from his person for even two minutes, I can tell his little body holds the willpower, if I can only use the next few days to find the means to get him there.
After our main training exercises are done, Roscoe finishes the session with a trick that would make any circus pony jealous. With the audible drum roll playing in my head, I fish out the hula hoop hidden behind the kennel, and put it a few inches above the ground. Roscoe does his signature rearin, before he canters up to the hoop and takes a gigantic leap, clearing the obstacle and again rearing up on his hind feet waiting for the affirmation of a job well done, along with a paycheck of goodies from my treat bag.
He cuddles into my arms as I lift him up off the ground and begin our walk back to his shelter room. His eyes are dreamy, as I can tell the training has left his little reserve weakened and ready for a nap. With kisses planted up and down his face, I place him in his shelter room where he is greeted by his Chihuahua friends, whom he greets with enthusiasm and then moves over to his blanket-lined bed, with his buddies following, as they all curl up in a dog pile, moving in next to each other for warmth and ready to share in their Chihuahua dreams.
With a smile, I take one last glance at Roscoe and leave in anticipation for our next training session, where I know I’ll be greeted by Roscoe, who will once again be literally rearing to go, as he throws his body up in the air as I attach the leash, ready to race again.

Murphys law if you will. When a client schedules an appointment for me to remove a tick from his or her pet, the turns out to be a mole or a skin tag about 90% of the time.
I have seen many pets suffer needlessly as their owners have tried to yank, pry, burn, or twist moles or skin tags off their animals. Therefore, I hesitated to offer advice on tick removal because so often when a person suspects an embedded tick on their pet, they are wrong.
But what if you are absolutely, positively, 100% certain that your pet has an embedded tick? You can see the legs. You can tell the difference between an Ixodes and a Dermacentor. You are absolutely certain that your pet has a tick. What then?
In 1996, before I started vet school, I was on a flight from San Jose, Costa Rica to Los Angeles. I had spent the last week of my first trip to Central America in Corcovado National Park, a spectacular and famously tick infested rainforest in the southwest corner of Costa Rica.
As I mulled over what I might say during my upcoming vet school interview, I suffered an unpleasant revelation. Something was making my rear end itch. In the airplanes bathroom my worst fears were realized: I had a tick embedded in my rear.
In the privacy of my Oakland apartment later that day, I discovered that the situation was more serious than I had expected. There was not one tick but twelve, embedded all over my body.
I tried lighting matches, putting them out, and using the still hot match tip to cause the ticks to withdraw. The ticks were not fazed, but I did burn myself in several places.
For my next attempt, I applied a common cold sore remedy to the ticks. No effect. Next I smothered the ticks with petroleum jelly. If the ticks noticed that I was tryikng to get rid of them, they didnt let on. They passively rode out my efforts without batting an eye (metaphorically speaking, since ticks dont have eyelids).
Finally, I turned to tick twisting. Using tweezers, I twisted the ticks off of my body. Success! I removed 12 tick thoraxes and 12 tick abdomens. Unfortunately, 12 tick heads were left embedded in my skin.
About eight months later, as my body was finally completing the process of digesting and eliminating the heads that were left in my body through my inept attempts at tick removal I took my first course in veterinary parasitology.
One day in class Dr. Patricia Conrad, parasitologist and expert in the field, described the best way to remove a tick. I wish I had known it sooner. I find that it removes entire ticks about 90% of the time.
Here, according to Dr. Conrad, is the best way to remove a tick from your pet:
Grasp the tick firmly wth hemostats (aka tweezers) as close to the skin as possible. Pull gently but firmly straight away from the skin until the tick comes out. Do not twist. Avoid grasping the ticks abdomen. This can cause regurgitation of stomach contents into your pet, increasing the likelihood of Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and other scary tick-borne diseases.
Some other points: tick prevention is better than tick removal. In my experience, Frontline is the tick preventative with the best safety and efficacy profile. No tick preventative is 100% effective.
Finally, think at least six times (twice is nowhere near enough) before removing a tick from your cat. Healthy cats almost never suffer from tick infestation due to their good grooming habits.
